Re: Why not to boat in Winter?

My mother boated in nothern New York into the first week of December into her 70s.Many times she had to chip ice off the motor and gear before boating. Many times I removed ice and water from my open boat before boating. We would leave the motor down because usually the impeller would be in soft water even though heavy skim ice was on the water. You need to be aware a break down can be very unpleasant possibly dangerous.A cell or 2 way radio would be smart.Of course as stated before dont go swimming.

Well I did it.....it was a bit on the cold side. Next time I think I'll get a balaclava and goggles!!
There were no sticks or anything in the water...actually the water looked cleaner than it did in summertime!

Go for it Rudderman! We'll be thinking of you... what's the water temperature there in Ireland? It's 24 degrees Celcius here (about 78F) on THE island. Have fun in that lovely looking little 10 footer.

Re: Why not to boat in Winter?

I boat all year round! Spring / Summer / Fall it is on the Rinker with my family, during the Winter it's called DUCK HUNTING! I love duck hunting mostly because I get to go out on the lake in my old beat up duck boat and enjoy being out on the water. During my freezing cold duck hunts I pass by coves and points that I frequent during the summer and remember those Saturday's of frying in the sun while I am freezing in the duck blind!

I'm not sure what the water temperature is right now.....I'm guessing 6 or 7 degrees C?
I picked up some Military-issue Dust, Wind and sand goggles and a balaclava on ebay for next time!
Gotta love the € to $ exchange rate!
Unfortunately I *may* have to sell the boat within the year to pay for a deposit on a house that I want to build :-( I hope it doesn't come to that!

Its colder on the water than on land.
Windchill is more of a problem on wide open space(water).
Falling in:hypothermia is a bear.
You are a long way from the nearest hot coffee shop.
Dress in layers, wear polypropelene, enjoy life and dont let any critical body parts freeze.

You reckon you'll have more fun in a house than a boat?

Keep the boat, man. You'll forever regret it if you part with it.

Re: Why not to boat in Winter?

I always continue Boating/Fishing Way Late into the season..............

This year, the Last Trip Out was January 13th, on the St Lawrence river..............
It was Frozen Solid, about a week later...........

I'm Boating/Fishing from the time in the Spring when I can get the trailer in deep enough to get the boat Off,
Till the trailer will no longer break thru the ice to launch.............
Proper Draining is the Key....... I start doing this in October.............
