Asking a question at times on this forum can be intimidating. First thanks to all who responds to asked questions. However it can at times be very intimidating especially some of the response one receives.

Read... Read.... Read is one that is often used. While this is good and the best way to get the answers, we should understand that even though one reads he/she may need a little afirmation and this helps a very long way. People ask questions to get information and most times for quick answers.
Reading also is tedious especially when you have to search and you cannot always come up with the correct word or phrase for the search engine to come up with the answers. The person who ask the question may want an immediate answer. In some cases, as in mine for instance, I have read, read, and read, and even with the reading the volume of information is so vast that I cannot always remember where the information is and would rather ask a quick question to get a quick answer.

How can we avoid this intimidation?
One quick way I have learned is that if I do not know the immediate answer, I would not respond. There is someone here who may have the answer or where specifically it can be located. I may myself try to do some search then respond with the information or give a location where the information is.

The purpose of this forum is to help and everyone does a great job.
But at times it really helps the person who ask the question, if they can get an answer rather than the intimidating words...read....read....read.

Now I'll go back to my reading. Everyone here helps and I appreciate the help I receive

Re: WHY or "y" ASK A QUESTION????

This thread was not intended for an argument back and forth. I would like for it to be a friendly discussion...no you and they. If I may, you have been a very helpful individual on this forum. you have come to the rescue of lots of individuals that needs help including myself. The fact that you were the first to respond shows how much you like to help. So too are a lot of others and I do not want top list any. Also I did not say not to read, but there are times when one needs a very quick response and it will take hours of reading to get the answer. All I am saying is that we can be much help if we have the answer to reply and if we dont allow those with the answer to reply. This helps greatly. It is very intimidation if anyone ask a question and then to be told read..read ...read. Maybe there should be a place on this forum to encourage the read ...read....read. then none may have a question.

Re: WHY or "y" ASK A QUESTION????

Boat Restoration, Building, and Hull Repair forum is just like a television crime drama ........ only the names are changed to protect the innocent!

People are naturally lazy......... they ignore the SEARCH and the rarely (never) read the Sticky pinned posts that are in most of the forum sections.

Sadly, people feel that it is necessary to join in and just add a "me too" type comment w/o actually having any knowledge or answering the question. It drive many of us "old timer's" nuts to read some of the post padding comments. Just about every section on iboats has experts and then there are the "sharpshooter's" who argue and attack for no good reason except attention and self satisfaction.

With such a large active forum it is hard to keep up with everything. I tend to ignore most fiberglass and epoxy questions since in the last 8 years I have returned to tin boats and we have many fiberglass pro's here. On the same note..... many of the fiberglass people will not respond to tin boat questions. This condition happens in every section........ Bond-O I have to pick on him for a minute....... does not really answer many suzuki outboard questions but I know Bond-O can repair any outboard.

Where it is funny ........ but we can not prove it....... we have member's who answer questions or "intervene" in a thread and they actually have no knowledge or experience of the subject at all!

So if you have a quick question ....ask it but be prepared for a multitude of responses....... people will tell you to read ;) other's will direct you to some other link (I am guilty of that) some will be answer's and maybe one or two will be a right answer....... then there is that idiot who is the sharpshooter to pick on someone's answer.

Re: WHY or "y" ASK A QUESTION????

What exactly are you having issues with?

I thought you have received some pretty good answers so far to your questions.

I know I never replied to your one's about Glastrons or I think you had some power questions that were specific too. Because I don't know the answers.

It's a big forum and some people that are on it know a lot about different things, while some others really just want to convince people how much they know or that something they did is right and everybody should do it no matter how many people try to explain the folly in their thinking and offer up resources of info from different sources explaining it.

It varies greatly but you have to believe that everyone is here to help each other out.

Hey Bob, some of those so called post padding comments are people comunicating and sharing in someones project. (worse person has got to be Bondo "Ayuh.." and sure he annoys a lot of people but i think he's funny and when he does actually type something it can be some good info.)

Do not take this personal, I am having fun and do appreciate all this forum offers. I have learned tremendously and have used the advise of many. This is just a simple discussion.

Re: WHY or "y" ASK A QUESTION????

lol......post pad.:D

boat building or restoration is not a quick answer.....there a thousand different ways to fix a boat and a bazillion wrong ones.

the reason we say read read read.....yes...i do it.....is because many factors are involved in a different repair.....each case is different......you you have to learn what case is best for you....

as far as being intimidated......i have been on this forum for a few years.....i rarely see someone here intimidating anyone.....
we WANT to help you.

the only intimidating one here is bob vt....
if we dont get our answers right......he will strap our azz to the next demolitions pack he sets off :D

oh.....and by the way.... auyh....the one liners bond-o comes up with contain a whole volume of good information.

To me , its not intimidating to be told to read.
Its not as convenient, if I tell someone to read I try to give a link.
Thats more helpfull.

lol bob :D

, but there are times when one needs a very quick response and it will take hours of reading to get the answer.

after re reading you second post a few times.....i agree with the above statment.

when working on a motor and all i need is the firing order of a sbc  i would rather just ask what it is......however this comes back to bond-o's statment of typing something 10 gazillion times.

when building a boat ....i may ask a simple question like....what do i use....poly or epoxy?......
a quick 2 second answer right?.......not.

the above question has just about caused fist fights around here. (again prompting bob vt's above answer) :D

the reason we ask you to read read read....is because there is a lot to this game of fixing boats, and arming your self with knowlage is allways the best thing.

but i do know.....this forum is the best on line source for finding those answers, we have a tremendous amount of talent here, and they are willing to share.

cheers

Re: WHY or "y" ASK A QUESTION????

On a personal level, anytime I come to a forum seeking answers, I spend a few days reading all the posts I can absorb to get a feel for the members on the forum, figure out who the active members are, and see if I can find an answer that someone gave in another post that might be relative to my own.

Once I've accomplished that, then I make my first post. Because of my reading, I can make sure that I give out pertinent information to the task at hand, so that I can get a more informed response because the person reading my question has specific information to work with. This makes my question better, my information is already in the post and then more specific requests can be made from those trying to help instead of the common response of "year, make and model" or, "we need a picture".

I don't mind answering or giving my opinion to questions to the same ones over and over. What I do mind is the questions that are just too simple..."help, I bought a boat, now what?"

Seriously?
