I assume that someone told you to put one in now as opposed to spring. I can't think of any reason why you would do in now instead of later. I could be wrong though.

Agreed....
Unless anyone comes up with a reasonable explanation....

Replacing the impeller in the spring is fine if you plan on doing it yourself. Otherwise just make sure that you get it done early in the spring as some shops get busy with work from everybody waiting till the last minute to get things fixed just before the boating season. JMO

Re: Why put new water impeller in?

Curled up in the cold is not going to affect the impeller in any way. If people can go 5-10 years without changing them and they sit winter after winter bent in one direction, then a few months of being installed before the season is not going to make any difference. They usually fail do to sand and crap being run through them along with old age,not from being bent as they are designed to do for a couple seasons.Having said that if you want to wait, then wait.

Thanks, I have the lower unit off so thought I would check the empeller, it is cracked so got a new one off this web site. If it makes no difference, I will put her on now and test everything so it will be ready come spring, summer. Yes, do it myself!

My last Johnson ha is previous impeller in there for 19 years and still dug a hole in the yard from the water squirting out the peehole. I changed it anyway. I wouldnt go three years without changing a Mercury impeller. Change it whenever you like. Sittng in the cup won't wear it out.

You have a Mercruiser, and this is the Mercury OUTBOARD forum. You also posted a similar question in the IO forum. Please don't post the same question in multiple forums.
