What is the Idea behind removing the outdrive first? I was a motorcycle tech for 8 years,so I have mechanical knowledge but am a newbie when it comes to boats. I need to replace a cracked 4.3 Liter and i'm sure will be asking a lot of questions in the process. This seems like a great forum to gain knowledge about boats, and the help is very much appreciated.

The drive shaft on the outdrive goes into an engine coupler that is attached to the engine shaft. You would have to move the motor forward to break the connection between the out drive and the engine shaft, then go up with the engine, rather then just hoisting the HEAVY engine straight up. Get it now?

Also worthy of mention is that you will need to align the new engine with an alignment tool.....
The drive has to be off for that.....;)

Actually it depends upon what you are working on. I believe most are assuming you are working on a Mercruiser or something similar. I believe some of the old OMC outdrives could be left on while the engine was removed and replaced.

Just a reminder to always let us know what you are working on if you want specific (and more important) accurate answers. ;)
