Now I know alumiunim will not rust, but my rims on my trailer are rusting. I am thinking that at one time they may have been chrome dipped, and the chrome is coming off. I was working on them last night sanded down and repainted. yes repainted someone had already painted them. yep is an older rig. but they were silver, now one is white, do the other one tonight.

Ayuh,... You don't actually say so, are you stating the Wheels are in fact Aluminum...
I don't knows I've ever seen Chrome plated aluminum...
Polished,+ lacquered maybe,..??

If so, I'd assume the rust you're seeing is stains from the lugs, or some other steel parts...

Re: why rusty

Chrome over aluminum is done all the time on wheels. And it peels like mad after a couple years because of the dissimilar expansion properties of chrome and aluminum.
But if you've stripped one wheel and it came out white, my bet is you've got a white spoke wheel that someone painted silver and now you're looking at the original powdercoat. And it's a steel wheel, not aluminum.
