I just see that the posts on the Evinrude-jonhson section are almost double than Mercury-Mariner and not to mention the other brands!
Is this happens because there are more Evinrude-Jonhson motors sold in USA or because there are more prone to problems?

So they are not more prone to problems than other motors! The frequency that problems occur on OMC motors is probably the same as on other brands but there are so many post (and owners facing a problem!) because OMC motor are much more in absolut number than all the other brands together!

The Johnnyrudes seem to last forever !!! therefore there are more older ones still in circulation. Not saying other brands will not just that a lot were sold and still in regular use.

OMC has a 100 year history, Merc has a 50 year history. there were more OMC product sold, until the late 1990's when OMC was mismanaged and went backrupted. BRP bought the motor division, and recently dropped the Johnson line, in favor of the Evinrude Etec, which is a fantastic motor.

there are many 1950's vintage OMC products still doing daily work.

A huge number of the posts are related to motors from the 1950's, they still run well and parts are still around. Not so with other brands.

Re: Why so many post on Evinrude-Jonhson section?

I think there are just many more members with older motors on this forum.

if you have a newer motor with no problems you probably wouldn't need this forum!

Mercury is the largest selling O/B. I bought mine for that reason and for easy resale.

I asked that question too when I had issues with a 10 year old Merc and awalys get very few responses (if any), on our Merc forum here.
In my opinion, "anyone" asking a question and getting zero responses is a sin for a good active forum.

I know Verado has a great users forum (my next motor).

Anyone know where to go on the web for a good Merc forum for issues that come up?

I know the Hulltruth.com is a good forum to ask and have many responses come back, but they are mostly geared towards larger O/B's mounted on center console ocean type rigs. I can get help there sometimes because many users even though they have big O/B's, they also have kickers that are closer to the sizes we discuss here.

I'm very disappointed with Merc feedback on this site. I've tried to give back and help others and repay all the help that I've received in the past . . .

But if you own a Merc (or new other O/B brand) I think it's more of a case that you have alluded to already . . . the 4 Stroke EFI models (or the 2 stroke Etec's) are clearly less problematic, no matter which brand and there are clearly less knowledgeable members here on repairs to these newer models. The newer electronics and EFI seems to make them run pretty much problem free if the regular maintenance is done.

It's a free public forum...kinda like a public park. No obligation on anyone's part to participate. Take it as such and respect it as a resource...if you're disappointed in the Merc forum, volunteer to moderate it night and day, and market it, and promote it...get the point?

This is true of any brand though. I take the 5 year extended warranty if it was not offered as part of some type of bonus to get you to buy.

I think I paid $300 for it but what's the cost of one dealer repair.

Buy the end of 5 years I've clocked close to 1000 hours and I'll upgrade to a new O/B.

That's my plan!

the good people we have in the Merc forum are so busy repairing Mercs, that they have little time to devote to the forum. we had some really good guys, that dropped out, due to the fact that they were on dial up.
i personally do what i can there, but i am not qualified to give indepth Merc advice.

Ya, I'm hearing you. That was one of my points in that there are not many qualified Merc guys here.

I know the regulars always chime in if they know an answer.

We need a Tohatsu Guru type for Mercs!

Ex: I own a 1981 Johnson 9.9 that has never been touched by a screwdriver except for LU oil changes and 2 set of plugs over 29 years.

My son will soon have it ... and at this rate my grand-son will eventualy use it ... LOL

That explains why you see more of them ... G

Re: Why so many post on Evinrude-Jonhson section?

I grew up on the Fox River/Chain-o-Lakes and at that time OMC was manufactured in Waukegan Illinois about 1/2hr away while Mercury was manufactured in Fond du Lac Wisconsin about 3hrs away.

At that time I would guess sales of both were about equal here. Though today there are many more old OMCs running around here than Mercs. Mainly because of parts availability for OMC. Some of the older Merc parts just are too hard to find or are too expensive when you can find them.

So with more of them still running around it only makes sense that there would be more people asking for help. Yet again in this area there are still a few of the Old dealers around that still have some NOS. for some of the small parts. There are even a couple of them that have been in business at the same location for over 50 years! So who knows how much longer they will be around due to deaths and retirements.
