why so many power pack failures?

So 1986 evinrude 90 hp has just cooked its 6th powerpack in 4 years. I've been replacing them with used ones but now the local supply is dried up. Are these power packs just weak by design, or is there other issues that lead to repeated failures? Are the aftermarket ones any good, or will they fail often as well? Thanks for any and all insight.

Poor grounds can cause it. Check the bolts that run the grounds for powerpack and coils arent corroded

Heat can cause lots of trouble to any type electronics. Make sure those power packs are good and tighten down and all the connections are clean and tight as well. When the packs are not tightened down that leads to heat buildup. The heat will dissipate through the mounting areas... Also make sure you have the plugs gapped correctly too. If they are gapped too large, it makes the power pack work harder to jump the gaps...heat increases and problems start. It would be a good idea to check the temperature of the engine when running too. If it is getting too hot, that could be your problem with packs going bad.
