Why such a difference between electrical tapes?

Some rolls of common black vinyl electrical tape will stay wrapped, the cut end will hold down. Other rolls will start to unwrap in a week or so after being applied. As far as I know, both rolls of 3/4" black plastic tape (not the old cloth tape) look and feel the same. I started putting a tie wrap on the end of the tape wrap to be sure it didn't unravel (like when sealing the ends of car electrical conduit where the wires exit). Shouldn't be necessary.

Both rolls of tape were bought at home centers in the electric section. This is not the first time I find differences in rolls of electrical tape. Been having this experience for years. I no longer have the package to compare product descriptions, but I suspect there is some difference.

Years ago, when my house was being built, I found a left over stub if 1" wide black electric tape. Probably only 4 or 5 feet were left on the roll, and it was just tossed to the ground. That tape was incredible. It sticks, even when heated, doesn't unwrap, the adhesive doesn't turn gooey letting the tape slide around, and where I used it years ago, its still in service, like on tool handles.

Am I using products intended for different applications?

Probably two different brands. Another case of you get what you pay for. You can't expect to get quality tape if you pay 79 cents a roll.

I have part rolls of 3M tape that have been in the shop for ten years or so that still work as good as they did back when they were new.

Ayuh,... It's all about the Quality,+ you get what you pay for...

Personally, I buy only 3m tape from an Electrical supply house...

Same experience as dwco5051 and Bondo here. Only electrical tape I've found worth having is the Scotch 3M. A little more expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Great tape! 'spensive though and I've only found it in very small rolls.

Plymouth premium electrical tape is good, too. But it has to be the premium stuff.

Re: Why such a difference between electrical tapes?

I suspect the posters here already know this, but it is worth mentioning.

Mark 42 mentioned a cut end, but all too often I have seen people apply the tape by wrapping the roll around the joint then pull until the tape snaps instead of cutting it.

Over the next few days the pulled and stretched end pulls back and the adhesive lets go.

Does not invalidate the statements that a good quality tape is worth the cost, but had to mention it.

I always pull it tight and snap it and unless it gets kid picked or oily it always holds tight. I work industrial maintenance and have used all kinds but my personal roll is always the old reliable.

Guess I've just been using the wrong stuff. Thanks guys, I'll pick up the 3M brand next time I see some.

Not all vinyl tape is created equally.
You have many brands on the market, but as many have said 3m is the favourite brand.
First thing that has to be mentioned is the climate the tape will be used in, is the glue good to go at -40 or will it only work in +40, so there is a range in what the tape is good for, 3m 88 tape was one we alway's used, but in hot weather lots of goo, but was good at -10c (put a role in your pocket and you are good to go at any temp)
Second thing that must be mentioned is some tapes are rated for their insulation values. IE amps, volts

Good ole 33 is the best. Only stuff I use. As stated, you get what you pay for. Compare a 33 role to a econo brand. You will find the core to be small which equals more on the roll of 33 vs a larger core on the econo brand. I find wrapping it tight makes it hard for it to unwrap.

My local Wal-Mart sells Small rolls of the 3M 33. It's pricey, especially for the amount you get, but a lifesaver at 8pm on a sunday...

3M also has a lower quality stuff that needs to be avoided as well...but the 33+ is where it's at....

Super 88 is good too and is about a hair thicker than Super 33+.
The small core means quality. I looked at some junky big core Scotch at work today and its marked "700". ABSOLUTE RUBBISH.
