Some rolls of common black vinyl electrical tape will stay wrapped, the cut end will hold down. Other rolls will start to unwrap in a week or so after being applied. As far as I know, both rolls of 3/4" black plastic tape (not the old cloth tape) look and feel the same. I started putting a tie wrap on the end of the tape wrap to be sure it didn't unravel (like when sealing the ends of car electrical conduit where the wires exit). Shouldn't be necessary.
Both rolls of tape were bought at home centers in the electric section. This is not the first time I find differences in rolls of electrical tape. Been having this experience for years. I no longer have the package to compare product descriptions, but I suspect there is some difference.
Years ago, when my house was being built, I found a left over stub if 1" wide black electric tape. Probably only 4 or 5 feet were left on the roll, and it was just tossed to the ground. That tape was incredible. It sticks, even when heated, doesn't unwrap, the adhesive doesn't turn gooey letting the tape slide around, and where I used it years ago, its still in service, like on tool handles.
Am I using products intended for different applications?
