Gelcoat on to an old boat?

Gelcoat on to an old boat?

Dear friends across the water,

I have been following Jay's thread and notice that he is gelcoating in some of his work, ski locker etc. I am restoring an old cabin cruiser and would like to gelcoat the hull and underside.

But I thought gelcoat had to be sealed form air, first on in the mould etc, so I am wondering how did Jay do his gelcoat? I can't find any info on this in his thread, and I'll throw that question out in general - is it possible to paint or roll on gelcoat and have it cure?

Many thanks

lol.....item 11 can take a few years......but worth the read !

gellcoat does not have to be sealed from air to cure....but it DOES LIKE to be next to a solid surface. (like a freshly waxed mold).

you can spray or roll gellcoat.
if you are across the pond....you must brush it or roll it....it is illeagal to spray it.

work in small batches....catylize at 2% with mekp....and you are good to go!

When using gel coat like a paint, wax is added so it will cure tack free on the surface. The surface cure of gel coat (polyesters) are inhibited by contact with air, so there is a very thin film on the surface that may stay tacky if no wax is used. Everything under the surface will cure as normal even without the wax.

The wax floats to the surface and forms a barrier between the gel coat and air.

Guys, sorry about posting 2 questions in one post. I thought I had started a new thread but obviously I had actually started a new "reply" to an existing thread. DOH!
