Why do people let their perfectly nice boats sit out in the weather and rot? Is it that difficult or exspensive to put a $20 tarp over them if nothing else. Craigslist makes me sad sometimes.

its flat olive drab.......


the boat is tilted and the plug is out...why does it need a tarp?

its aluminum

I cover the motor so it doesnt fade....


in the fall I put a cover ove rit so i dont have to pick leaves out of the bilge

PS i have a Cabelas top of the line cover...$280

put it traps water unless you go through the hassle of setting all the bows just right and pull it down tight with like 20 quick snaps


for what?

Well yeah, you can get away with that on that boat, but boy there are a ton of neglected boats around.

I hear you. There was a nice (at one time) boat tied up at a dock in Mckees Rocks (on Ohio River north of Pittsburgh) for a couple of years. It kept getting lower and lower in the water. I haven't been past there in a while, but it has to be sunk by now. Looked like a boat that i would aspire to own some day, waisted.......

IN addition to the priority issue, they assume the boat is like a car and putting it in the garage is only optional.

And as Bob points out, there are plenty of boats made for outdoor use. As to the neglected ones, perhaps those owners thought that they boat an outdoor boat, but didn't. They assume it's OK being uncovered; the damage is gradual, and by the time it catches up, it's too late.

I see a number of boats going to waste over a simple thing like a missing hatch.

Yup, see it all the time. Sure I understand those without vinyl or carpet, but most I see don't fit that category. I agree that $20 would buy a cheap tarp and enough clothsline to cinch it down. I suspect for some it has to do with the "throw away" mentality that has gripped just about every other consumer good in the US. People just don't care, and have little desire to preserve things for the next owner. Sad.

It drives me crazy also.

I think the logic is "it's a boat, it's ment to get wet" however flawed that is...

In our community I see lots of boats pushing through the winter with just the snap on cockpit covers on rather a tarp or shrinkwrap..

Don, most of the traffic here is from people opining about what others do with, or to, their boats. Sure, it's usually irrelevant, and often goes too far, but someone's reading them!

Maybe it just needs to be under SHT since it's more of a comment (via rhetorical question) than a request for information.

To the O.P. Do you currently own a boat? If so what size? How old are you? What are your priorities?

I ask, because all of these items can attribute to a boats wellfare.

Is it that hard to cover a boat? It was not easy covering the 34' Sedan in my sig. The year before it was not easy covering the 29' Express in my sig. It isn't just slap a tarp on and call it done. It takes a few hours to set the cover supports up, fight the giant tarp, with the wind and the cold (assuming you find a nice enough day, in the fall, on a weekend, to drive to the marina and get her covered).

Not everyone has a small runabout, or fishing boat sitting in the driveway, and therefore, experiences may vary.

With that said, I make sure my boat is covered every year, and this year had to cover two. One got shrink wrap, one got a tarp only over the bridge and cockpit. When a tarp blows, or comes off, sometimes it takes a bit to get to it and get it right, or even to notice it.
