How is that even possible? I figured the less friction the faster

Golf ball effect, imperfections break the surface tension and make "it" go faster. Ever see the Mythbuster's Golf ball car, it got better fuel mileage than the slick shiny car. Some of the high end offshore boats have raked cuts formed into the bottom of the hull for this purpose, to pull in air and break the surface tension, check out this Fountain hull

I'm not suggesting to take a ball peen hammer to the bottom of your boat and bang it up... But let us know how much faster your boat runs after putting 10,000 dimples in it (Now where did that big grin smiley go...)

less friction IS indeed faster and tiny bits of air trapped by the rougher surface make less friction on the surface of the water than the perfectly smooth glossy surface that the water sticks too...

I think there is a very fine line between less friction and increased drag.
