Why would anyone want a Volvo 280 outdrive?????

It's official. 9 out of 10 americans voted the Volvo 280 outdrive as one of the worst outdrive designs in the world.

Recent reports show that the 280 drops values on boats by an estimated 50%. People have complained about the fact that they cannot beach their boat at lakes due to shallow ground when approaching the beach. To make matters worse, you cannot backup your boat when leaving the beach due to the drive being JUST SLIGHTLY RAISED to miss the ground below since it would slam into the bellhousing due to no locking mechanism. Even worse is the possibility of destroying the electric tilt mechanism. At this point many americans are boycotting the Volvo 280 outdrive for it's obvious operational deficiencies

This drive was clearly intended for the ocean only. It has been reported that the sweedish manufacturer of outdrives have apparently forgotten that the U.S. has thousands of lakes that are enjoyed by millions of Americans each year.

Volvo 280 outdrives are now deemed non-lake freindly!!!

Then don't buy a 20 to 25 year old boat with a 280 drive that doesn't have trim. Some of the 280's did. After those old 280 drives went out of production, the started with the 290's, which did have trim. And every thing since the 280 had trim.
Now why would associated press get all upset about some old boats with old drives and make silly statements like that?

Yes....I figured you guys wuold have sensed the sarcasm with the whole AP thing.

I'm just bent out of shape about the Volvo 280 ordeal. I just bought this boat (24' Bayliner Ciera Cruiser) and it's very nice. I got a great deal on it and was unaware of the drive aspect.

I'll tell you one thing, starting a rumor (lie) that "AP said 9 out of 10--------- Yada, yada, yada" is not the way to go about saying that YOU blew it by not doing your homework before buying.
You bought it because it was, how did you say it "Very nice". Well, it still is a very nice boat for many people.

Don - sometimes it's hard to get the "tone" of a post on the internet - my take on it was that it was flavored with a little scarcasm. And I appreciated the education, if nothing else.
