I have a bayliner restore project i am working on, i am repowering the boat. I am wondering what outboards are good, and what to stay away from? i am working with about $800-$1000 budget for a motor, so i will be looking for something older.

thanks.

Sorry,

I have a 1973 Bayiner Super Tahiti, 16ft, rated for up to 105hp.

you dont say if the original controls and cables are functional..if not your budged may be more like $5-7oo, a decent control box can vary anywhere from 1-200..cables $25-45 ea. if possible buy a merc..older merc outboard parts are cheap and readily available.also keep in mind that buying an older motor might cost to tune up..parts like the impeller will need to be replaced if motor hasn't been used in a while..carbs cleaned..lower unit oil changed..there's more to repowering than one thinks.

I'd say stay away from motors in the $800-$1000 range, unless you do all your own mechanical work.

I've had good luck with both Mercury and Evinrude.

Ya for under a grand, you wont find much in the 100hp range that is in superb condition. I paid $550 for my 1966 merc 50 hp that needed carbs rebuilt. Good 100hp motors are more in the $1500-1700 range.
