I rebuilt my 1987 Evinrude 48 SPL last fall, due to the pistons being badly burned down the sides, Due to winter setting in, I didnt have time to run it on the water, I have only gotten to run it on the hose. Well I am getting ready to do a water test and I am trying to finish up any last minute details. I used Joe Reeves method for setting the Wide open timing. I checked it before hand and it was at around 20 Degrees with it spinning over at full throttle with both plugs out. My engine tag calls for 19 Degrees, with Joes directions saying to subtract 4 degrees from that, so I set it at 15 Degrees. does this sound correct or did I goof ? I have spent lots of money, rebuilding this pontoon, Trailer and Engine and I dont want to mess up an burn up my new pistons and bored out Cylinders.

Thanks

Sounds like you did it correctly. I know I shouldn't say this but if you can check it on the water at WOT. Be CAREFUL.!!!!

Thanks for the reply Boobie, I was wondering, if it was set at around 20 degrees, and it gains 4 degrees while running, thats like 24 degrees total. So what would that do to the engine if U had ran it like that ? And I am wanting to carefully water check the timing

On pontoon boats it is most important to get the correct prop on the motor.----------Lugging the motor with too much pitch means bad things will happen !

By setting the timing 4 degrees less than spec at cranking it will come up to spec at WOT on the water.
