hey i have a 95 polaris SLX rebuilt motor, rebuilt carbs, just serviced. the ski sat for 8 months cause of a carb prob, i just got it fixed and everything checked and serviced they said it was running fine and hitting on all 3. i took it out ran it a lil rough and 2 miles later while turning the motor just died. i tried for 2 hours to restart but nothing. i took it home and it starts with lil trouble, i took it to water and it wont start. back at home i test cylnders and spark, got both. i took it back to water it starts and runs good, shut it off it took 3 min to start shut it off again and it wont start. so im lost and need some advice please help

Steve

Re: WIERD PROBLEM

sounds like maybe stale gas, did you fill with fresh gas after having the boat sit for 8 months. Water maybe in your fuel tank.

Re: WIERD PROBLEM

Just giving you a starting place or two....
If it were me, I'd change the plugs, the gas and fuel filter (if equipped), then if it acts up (quits running)pull the fuel line off and spin it over to see if it is a fuel pump problem or not. Then go from there.....To me it sounds fuel related.

Re: WIERD PROBLEM

hey i got new plugs(2 hours old) when i started it with the air filters off i saw a strong flow of gas, but u might be right i have it down to electrial or gas prob. Do u think a faulty battery could cause the prob? i doubt it but just askin. i think tomarrow im gunna go get a spark tester and see how that goes.

THX

Steve

Re: WIERD PROBLEM

The battery wouldn't (normally) give a problem while running like you described (unless maybe a loose connection on the post).

When checking the fuel flow (to narrow it down), it needs to be checked when the problem is acting up (could also be a line that is collapasing).

If you feel (or find) it's electrical check the conections at the run/kill/laynard switch (took me forever to find a problem here on a ski once, and I always check it first now).

Electrical stuff can be A PAIN to find.

k batt is deff bad i took off air cleaners and tried to start with another batt i saw plenty of fuel going in but it took a long time to start but when it did it ran ok. im thinking bad gas. Is there any way of draining gas, or should i just fill rest of tank with good gas right now there is bout a 1/4 tank of gas.

Steve

Re: WIERD PROBLEM

You could do either. I would try to siphon out most of it and then dilute whats left in the tank with good gas.

Re: WIERD PROBLEM

I hope your problem is the gas. I will tell you what I am seeing though. It will start easy when on the trailer, and when initially put in the water. Once in water is when trouble starts. I am thinking perhaps a bad head gasket, cracked head, or something that is allowing you to ingest water. I suggest you do a compression check, water ingestion can be very expensive if not caught early, trust me I know!

Re: WIERD PROBLEM

I double bixll, i had 95 slx that had water leaking from manifold and had to replace gasket approx 2hr job with correct tools start to finish. i also left plug out and filled engine with water, cracked rod and jammed between piston and cylinder wall (4 yrs ago 4K$$$).

Re: WIERD PROBLEM

May also want to seperate electrical box on top of battery, was common for these to leak water inside or form condensation and cause problems.
