I got the engine in my boat.

It ran great on land, but now when I try to start it, it turns over just like it should, but, right beofre it owuld typically start it binds. Like there is not enough juice ot start it and turn it over. I did a volt drop test to the switch and starter and it checked out. What would cause this?

I am guess a bad ground somewhere? Both batteries and starter arenew and all cables. Also, I have used nuts to hold the cables down, not wingnuts.

Could be a loose connection somewhere, it could also be the timing is way off.

I think you hit it on the head, I pulled the dizzy cap and the rotor and cap had a crack on it from when the hoist hit the cap. It was on the back half of the cap so I couldnt see it...

Why would the timing being off cause the engine to bind?

Spark plug firing when it shouldn't........like WELL before the piston gets to TDC. The starter might not have enough power to push it "over the top"....making it seem like it's binding or hydrolocking......

You said you "got the engine in your boat". Was this a rebuild or what? Regardless, if it was worked on it needs to be properly timed. Firing too soon will stop the engine from rotating. It can also break the nose off the starter housing.

Re: Wierd starting questions

the engine was a longblock i got and put together it was timed and setup on land and worked great. I got in and while putting it in the hoist cracked the cap and rotor. I am guessing it moved the dizzy in the process. I will reset up the timing tommorrow.

Thanks
