This isn't getting as much press:

Beverly Young, wife of Rep. C.W. Bill Young of Florida — chairman of the House Defense Appropriations subcommittee — was removed from the gallery because she was wearing a T-shirt that read, “Support the Troops — Defending Our Freedom.”
msnbc

but also note this quote from Sheehan:
She said she had one arm out of her coat when an officer yelled, “Protestor.”

“He then ran over to me, hauled me out of my seat and roughly (with my hands behind my back) shoved me up the stairs,” she wrote. She was then cuffed and driven to police headquarters a few blocks away.

“I was never told that I couldn’t wear that shirt into the Congress,” Sheehan wrote. “I was never asked to take it off or zip my jacket back up. If I had been asked to do any of those things...I would have, and written about the suppression of my freedom of speech later.”
The police said they told her it wasn't allowed in the chamber. Either way, if they didn't ask her to leave before arresting her, it won't look good for the administration.

Re: Wife of Republican Congressman Ejected From SOU Address

Read this morning that she, and all attending, were told beforehand that any political statments were not allowed. She wore the T-shirt under her jacket. I get tired of the news articles, including the one I read this morning, saying she lost a son in Iraq etc, ..., etc. It has nothing to do with a griving mother. Say who's paying her bills? That's whats it's about!

jtexas, haven't read/heard anything about Beverly Young. But, under the same rules she had to be removed -- I agree with doing that. Would be nice to hear on the news someone was standing up for the troops.

What has the administration got to do with her arrest?

Kwas, I agree nothing, but both ladies should have been given the opportunity to cover up the shirt. As to everyone was told, I call bs not the case, I believe Mrs. Young and Shehan.

"won't look good" Point being they take the heat, whether they have anything to do with it or not. The Republican lady with the pro-war slogan was politely asked to leave, while the anti-war protester was dragged out in cuffs by jack-booted thugs. Surprised I have to spell it out for you.

One was there to disrupt, the other wasn't. Both broke the rules and were removed. Get over it.

Poor taste for both. Tee-shirt is not proper atire for SOU regardless of what they say. They need a dress-code, like "button-up shirt and shoes required".

Well, I wasn't there so I can't attest to what happened there but from the reports that I have heard Sheehan created a comotion and did not comply with the athorities request to cover the shirt. She was then arrested. There have been no reports that the other women caused any trouble. I quess that you are going to have to spell it out for me. ;)

sorry to come on so strong...all the press reports up to this morning, only msnbc had anything about Mrs. Young.

Most of your sound-bite-only news-illiterate American public will only hear that Sheehan was arrested for wearing an anti-war slogan on her shirt. You don't want people believing that - especially if it's not true.

[plus which I agree with boatbouy - you'd think people would have better manners than to go in dressed like a tourist!]

Re: Wife of Republican Congressman Ejected From SOU Address

I've read of Mrs. Young on a couple of news sources.

One report alleges she called the security officer who informed her of the violation an "Idiot".

The tradition of no protest at joint meetings of Congress is long standing.

Think of it as a kind of a truce between waring parties.

If you allow any sort of political expression to be made by the audience then someone will have to make the call as to weather or not the expression is Pro/Con or Neutral. The debate could be endless on what is allowable and what is not.

It is much more expedient and fair to say no political expression is to be made at this meeting. Now no one has to sit in judgement and the focus can be on the business at hand.

I would like to know why one violater was arrested and one, who insulted an officer in the performance of his duties, was not.

This quote is from the San Francisco Chronicle:

Meanwhile, the wife of a prominent Republican congressman also was asked to leave the House chamber just before the president's speech because she was wearing a T-shirt that read: "Support the Troops -- Defending Our Freedom.''

Beverley Young, wife of Rep. C.W. Young, of Florida -- chairman of the House Defense Appropriations subcommittee -- was sitting about six rows from first lady Laura Bush when an officer noticed her shirt and told her she had to leave. She was not arrested.

"They said I was protesting," she told the St. Petersburg Times. "I said, "Read my shirt, it is not a protest.' They said, 'We consider that a protest.' I said, 'Then you are an idiot."

Just more dirty tricks. Who would exploit a greif riddled, deranged, mentally ill, lunatic with a history of public activism and ties to left wing fringe groups with a ticket to the SOU?

A democrat.

Re: Wife of Republican Congressman Ejected From SOU Address

Yes of course, because Republicans don't give out tickets to the SOU to anyone who has ever expressed a political opinion. Only Democrats do that, because, as everyone knows, they are evil. Well of course I guess they didn't have access to the diagnostic skills of the country's most talented physician, who has provided us with a diagnosis of "deranged, mentally ill, lunatic."

Parrott-head's question (why arrest one but not the other) is rhetorical - does anybody not know the answer? It's because everyone working security in the gallery knew where all the spouses and family members of all Members of Congress and other Important People would be sitting - knew who she was - and you just don't arrest an MC's spouse.

Bet they also knew who Sheehan was and if more thought had gone into it they would have been instructed NOT to arrest her.

In fact, wouldn't surprise me to learn that Mrs. Young's attire was carefully planned to offset Sheehan's - sort of to balance out the scale - to deflect any claims of bias or free-speech denial. Yes.......a clever plan.......

That's nothing compared to the coded message that was imbedded in the speech. The ultra-high frequency is only detectable by the microchips they implant in us during "immunizations". Measles shot?, ya right.

Re: Wife of Republican Congressman Ejected From SOU Address

Ah yes,

When handling anti-semetic lunatics who are prone to lying, the secret service dispatches the jackbooted storm troupers while wives of congressmen only get Dr. Phil look alikes. I mean they have to have two separate details if you are to believe the above posts.

Also, I would love to know the name of the militant right wing nazi skinhead, who recieved a ticket to the SOU address when clinton was our president. Name any right wing anyone who pulled a stunt like this. History as stated above, extends additional consideration of decorum for this address. But what the heck, filibustering court nominees is a rather new procedure, or say shutting down congress like the democrats (Harry Reid) did to grandstand for the cameras is a whole new spin on sad. How about ex-presidents commenting on current administrations like say Clinton or Carter have done. Who called our troop Nazis? What are they? Yep they are democrats. You can provide a blind eye to what has been exceptionally disgracful behavior on behalf of the democrats, but the fact is that they have been an embarrasement to all those who support them.

Lil Cindy is either a pathetically lost and greiving mother or an activist, but not both.

BTW, I thought both sides support our troops so the message on the T-shirt wasn't political. Or could it be that one side or the other doesn't really support the troops.
