Don't be afraid of the 4.3. it is not a torque deficient engine as was implied above. The 4" bore diameter makes a bigger difference than does the smaller displacement(and missing cylinders) compared to the 5.0. It is also 100lbs lighter, and this makes a huge difference in a smaller boat.

Also, should you decide that you still need more power, you can upgrade to a 4bbl carb(Edelbrock carb and intake manifold) for an honest 230hp and no loss in economy or reliability.

However, it will never make that mean v8 rumble.

I would hold out for a decent tow vehicle and keep the Chaparral.

Bought this to pull our boat, $6,200 + 5,700 to replace blown engine pulling the boat Has a 6.5 turbo diesel, excellent milage.

I just got a 4.3 Fuel Injected engine on my 195 Sport. I can snatch anythign up out of the water. Right now I am runnign a 19P Stainless prop.

Remember, the 4.3 has the same bore dimensions as a 350, just missing two cylinders. The Bore of the 305 is smaller and shrouds the vlaves on the heads, restricting air flow.

The 4.3 will be fine, and if you have an issue with it, just go to a shorter pitch prop.

I would get a better tow vehicle too. If you get another boat, who know what gremlins are in it. At least your existing boat is familiar.

190hp is best for this I've pulled 8 skiers out of the water, two of them on slalom with a 188HP merc, albeit the torquey V-8 302.
Still, there is a no problem arise.

I was wondering what engine you had in the Cherokee as well.

I have an '03 Grand Cherokee 4wd with the 4.0 V6. I've put 15,000 on it towing my boat that weighs around 3500 with trailer and everything. You must have the 4 cyl. model.

Also, I wouldn't buy a boat this late in the season. Wait until winter when everyone is making payments on something they aren't using. That's when you get your best deals. I had a buddy get an '04 Bayliner for payoff last winter. Payoff was around $7000 the best I recall.

Heavy towing with a Grand Cherokee or any similar SUV is tough on he Tranny. This can be mitigated with slowing down and keeping it from jumping gears all the time, etc. Take a 5,000 lb rated vehicle, read the manual and it says subtract for passangers, cargo, etc. and you're on the ragged edge with a 21' boat.

Heck, the trannys on some of these blow out just driving around town. Add lots of hilly towing and you're adding to the chance of blowing the tranny.

That said, I towed a 4,000 lb boat with a Honda Odyssey for a while, then just sold that and got a Trailblazer EXT that is 5,000 lb rated. i just am being realistic that if I tow a lot I will worry some. I'll change the fluid often and drive a bit more careful than if I had a "real tow vehicle". But if the tranny blows at 60k or whatever, life goes on.

Now that you have that brand new tranny if you plan on keeping it for a while might want to look into a good aftermarket tranny cooler. Remember heat kills, especially trannys. The v-6 is a good engine that gets wonderful mileage and does have plenty of power.

just buy an 80's chevy pickup for 1500 and call it a day. If you can find one with the diesel, all the better. These trucks are getting nice and cheep and you can tow plenty with them. They are pretty easy to find, and they can haul a pretty good load. Plus, I get 20-24 MPG in my K5 blazer with the 6.2 diesel.

ditch the bit*h yes i said it mine of 26 years is not looking over my shoulder right now. seriously though a smaller boat might be your best option, just get a BIG motor on it to ski with. as i said before you can never have to big a motor on a ski boat

Funny how much has changed in 20 months. They are practically giving used, full size, close to new suv's away compared to when this started and gas is cheaper now than then (something like a Suburban). I have the 2003 Chap in my sig which only has the v6 and is around 3400 lbs loaded plus the trailer. My 2000 Silhouette mini van with 180 hp and 205lbs of torque pulls it just fine but really needs 4 wheel drive for the wet ramps. I can't even imagine how much better a real tow vehicle would be. On a dry but steep ramp the old van yanks the heavy boat with total ease to my dismae. Then the little 190hp mercruiser pulls pretty good too but when the boat is full with 6 people you can feel the extra weight. Pulling just one person with a load of 4 people is very easy though.

I agree with those who are advising you to keep the boat that has been good to you. My boat engine swamped last year and I opted to rebuild it rather than looking for another. My car can't tow the 4000# boat so I am going to rent a truck to tow it to the lake for the season, and again at season's end. The cost is less than $200 and I have the boat I love. Something to consider... women love men who are men, not "Yes Dear, Men."
