It should with a light load, DSP, but not with a heavy load.

The power rating is confusing. What does 50-*70 mean, 50HP or 70HP?

I usually expect satisfactory performance with at least 70% of rated HP. 25HP doesn't seem to make the cut.

The rating means 50 hp tiller steer and 70 hp if it has a steering wheel.
It should push that boat up on plane provided you dont load it to heavy. A tunnel hull will decrease your top speed though.
if it where me I would put a 40 on said boat.

With a tiller handle max is 50hp with remote steering you can have up to 70hp. Would a 30hp do me any better I can have my motor converted to a 30hp by the local boat shop becuase they are "cheeter motors" as he calls them.
Thanks,
Duckslayingpro

Re: Will 25hp plane boat???

This may help.

I have a 14'11" boat - Lund Rebel 1450
Deep V aluminum with Straking Hull Design
75" beam
615 lbs
4 persons/1050 lbs total
30 HP Honda with 12 pitch prop.
40 HP Max on tiller, 50 on Console.

It is a little slow on plane (8 seconds), but it scoots at almost 29 MPH trimmed out with me and gear on flat conditions. I get 6200 RPM, which seems to indicate I should go up to a 13. I am a little worried this will make planing harder and I want to test with 3 people in the boat before making a call on that. Recommended WOT RPM for the motor is 5500-6000. My only complaint is plane time, but everything else is much improved over my last rig.

I don't know how the tunnel hull plays out, but my guess is the 25 would work. Getting it bumped to a 30 might not do much for the hole shot, but it should give you more top end.

duckslayingpro,

It should work for 2 people and some cargo. As a comparison, I have a 17' Lowe Rougneck. Specs in comparison:
Xpress Lowe
• Length: 16' 17'
• Bottom: 50" 60"
• Beam: 74" 83"
• Transom Ht: 16"/21" 21"
• Approx lbs: 525 610"

My first year I used a 25hp 2-stroke 3-cylinder Suzuki, and it worked fine with 2. But I sometimes go duckhunting with 3 or 4 people, plus dog or dogs, and gear, so it was a slow ride. I looked at increasing that motor 5hp, but when I figured the costs involved, I chose to invest in a motor I would be happy with for all conditions.

I now have a 50hp 4-stroke, and I need to hold on to my hat! Bottom line is, if you can live with the 25hp for a couple years it should work. If you only take a 3rd person along once in awhile and are willing to take your time, no problem.

Try the one you have now first. Might need to step down one or two in pitch. My guess is that 11 is the right number, but you should be able to make a good guess based on what you have now. If it wants to plane, but can't quite make it step down two. If it planes, but takes a long time, step down one.
