My 97 evinrude 50 lower unit failed on me and I'm considering a 78 evinrude 50 off craigslist. However, the 78 has no controls. Will my controls work??

I had a 2001 50 hp and it has a pigtail end..ie, it had several connectors for various things, 2 pin, 3 pin and 6 pin...maybe 4 or 5 total connectors....
the 78 probably uses the one big red connector for all the wiring...
the older controls are easy find, i ended up with three of the things ha ha..
actually I wonder what the connection on 78 looks like...I am not sure if they were making the big red single connectors that early....the 1980 50 hp i have, has the big red connector!!!
