Will a 45hp Chrysler push a 15' trihull

I have a 73 Starcraft Capri trihull, no wet foam or additional weight. Will my professionally rebuilt 45hp Chrysler push this boat adequately?

I also have a great running 70hp Evinrude (that I am considering selling) and a 50hp Evinrude that will need tuning at a minimum.

However since the Chysler is fresh from the shop and ready to go, I am thinking of putting it on the trihull.

Thoughts? I just want it to plane with me and a few kids....less than 450lbs total load.

I have a 67' 15.5' Glassmaster Tri-Hull with a 67' 55HP Chrylser Model # 55771A and the ole' Chrysler pushes great around 25 MPH with the family of four and we have a blast sking behind the thing. Its one of the smoothest running motors I have felt!

What is the boat rated to as far as HP goes? I'm sure you could get a 15ft boat going pretty good with the 45, just don't plan on doing a whole lot of water skiing behind it.

My buddy has a 16 ft Crestliner Fishhawk with a 50hp 4 stroke and he hits about 26 mph with it. Considering the beam, it is like pushing a barge and I think a 60-75hp would have been better suited for it for better performance from a holeshot perspective. Once it's running, it cruises nicely ( his boat is rated up to 90hp ).

On the other hand, we had a 70hp johnson on a 16ft deep V fiberglass boat and wasn't as impressed with it as the 100hp Evinrude we ended up putting on it. It will hit 36mph with the 100.

Having a solid motor that you can rely on is probably the best bet, regardless of what the HP rating is though. Go with whichever motor gives you the most piece of mind. Nothing worse than dealing with a buggy motor out in the middle of the lake. There is no replacement for reliability when you can't walk home.

My 14 foot MFG (although not a tri hull) does 27 with full load and 40 hp Evinrude. Tops out at 28-30 empty. Once your tri hull is on plane, it should run like a traditional V hull. My guess is you should do 25 to 28 depending on the prop you use.

Can you post pics? We love boat pics!
