I JBJ,
The 10 I spoke of is identical to yours - a '56. I also have a '54 Johnson 10, and a '59 Evinrude 10.
I consider myself an equal opportunity collector, although I do favor the Mercs just a tad. For the most part, I'm just as likely to be messing with a '29 Elto Speedster or a '48 Johnson PO-15 as I am a '51 Merc Super 10 Hurricane...

JBJ,

Double check that clutch dog. After doing a review of my parts catalogs and common parts manuals it appears that the QD10-18 and 15 hp motors share the same clutch dog 375711, which is still available new for 100.94 US. The gears are not compatible.

I know I used a 1954 15 hp clutch dog in my 1957 10 hp.

Hey, I have a Johnson '58 18hp also that I have to paint. Is your's the Johnson or Evinrude? I haven't painted any yet and need to learn but I guess that's for another thread...

Samo,
Mine's the '58 evinrude 18 you see in my avatar. I think I've finally found a main body color I like. I'll tell you what, the main part of the motor is easy but to get that lower unit to hold paint you're really going to have to take your time and do it right. Nymarine had or may still have some excellent advice on how to paint 'em on his site. He sells really good paint in the spray can, too, that sticks really well on the l.u. but it's very expensive. You probably already know that, but if you're like me, you may spend more than his paint trying to find a color that you're satisfied with. He has original color. His decals are the BEST but they're expensive, too. I took a closer look and that's a '58 on your avatar isn't it? IS this the candidate?

No, that's my '58 10. The '58 18 (electric start) is in my garage waiting for me to find the pieces to put an LU together and then the chances are that it will be blue and thus will need painting!

I just picked up the '58 18 this fall. Had been looking for awhile. Paid $100 for it with no LU but 105lbs in each cylinder and electric start. I was quite happy to get it :) And I have lots of 18 parts to put together an LU (but it'll be blue as most of my 18's are Evinrude's)

SAMO,
That was a great deal on that electric start! But come on, you can't tell me you don't like jerking the cord on a good starting evinrude just a little... :) Mine has 105 lbs. on both cylinders, too! I wonder what compression was from the factory?? I believe mine has fairly low hours since the drive shaft and prop shaft have very, very little grooving in the seal area. It runs great and cranks on 2 pulls cold, and 1/4 pull warm. Probably one of the easiest motors to start I've ever had. I'd still like to have e-start just to feel like I was a real "highroller". I've found a main body color for mine that I like pretty well. Here's a pic of it in base coat only, no clear. Also, a pic of my '55 10hp that is waiting on decals and white stripe redo. Very smooth running motor as well! thank goodness the '58 18 had 2 decent front emblems, as I hear they are hard to replace!

JBJ

Nice looking paint jobs. As I mentioned, that's something I've never done yet.

Yep, I pull start my 18's all the time and I have one ('66) on my 16' pontoon boat that starts first pull and want to replace it with the electric start so that I can lend it to my sister as she can't pull start a 3!

I also picked up a 25 hp '62 Electric Viking this fall ($100 complete) that I was also thinking of trying out on the pontoon boat. And of course everyone knows that 2008 is the year of the Viking! (it's a big anniversary year)
