I have a broken driveshaft snapped off in the pinion bearing in the lower unit on my OMC 800 . I have a known good OMC 400 unit , includes everything from the bellhousing to the prop.

So far my research has shown that the drive shaft, prop shaft, and gear ratio are different . Can I run this on my V8 boat, maybe change the prop pitch to compensate, and keep on boating ? If anyone wants to trade a 800 for a 400 let me know too! : )

No the proper gear ratio will not be available. Also the 400 is a lighter duty unit and not designed to Handel the power of the V8. Shaft are smaller around and may just twist off.

Looking at sterndrive.info the 400 gears are 13/26 and and the 800 gears are 14/26 , or maybe I have that reversed. That doesn't sound like much of a difference to a boat newbie. Hopefully I can find someone with a good 800 series lower.

400 will never hold up with a V8.......Either have yours repaired or buy a reman
