Will a stator for an 85 235 hp evinrude work for my 85 150 hp?

I was told that the stator is the same for a 1985 235 hp evinrude as my 150 hp. Is this true?

I don't know the answer offhand, but you could go to somewhere like marineengine.com and look up both parts. If they're the same part number, you're all set.

It depends. The 235, and the 150 hp XP/GT models all used the large 35 amp stator. Those charging systems were visually determined by the special vented flywheels atop the engine. These 150 models with the large stator were denoted by the model number which had the 150S designation. These are interchangeable. The normal 150 engines used the standard not-vented flywheels and a 9/10 amp stator. These stators are not interchangeable. The 35 amp stators had coils which appeared more open (no doubt for better cooling) than the 10 amp stator coils, which appear potted.

THE 235HP 1985 will fit only 1985 150 hp models with the last 3 letters in the model no COH , COS , cheers

Thank you all for your help by the way. And i talked to the guy today selling it and his son told me the wrong year. His is a 1984 235 HP Evinrude. My model number is E150TXCOS. So i guess i have the 9/10 amp stator?

the 10amp & 35amp stator still fits those models

The 84 235 uses the large 35 amp stator, same as the 85 235 model. You are correct, your engine uses the 9/10 amp stator.

Ok cool. Man I can't thank you enough. I almost bought yet another part I was told will be a fit and wasn't. lol I contacted my old parts person and even though she is a little more expensive which is why I have been going to other people for parts, she always gets me the correct part I need and I can trust her that it is because she has my exact motor sitting on a stand in her shop. lol I guess i gota spend the money to be certain. So ill get it this weekend and work on it Sunday and let you know how it turns out.

If the guy was selling parts off of a motor you could get the stator, flywheel and reg/rec and make yours a 35 amp system.

My personal opinion is as far as electrical goes if your thinking about buying used parts for an 85 model, don't do it. Even if the part checks good you can run into a problem in the near future. It's always a good parctice to buy new or in some cases rebuild it yourself so that you know it is done right.
