is it true that a small block chevy 305, 5.0 from say a 87 camaro, will replace a boat with mercruiser 5.0 engine. i understand they are not built the same, and marine engines are different and stronger. but would it work for long enough? i want to know if what somone is telling me is crap or not. thanks

Yes it should work, you will need to replace some vital parts to marine grade parts.

Good Luck

After having installed a few auto 305 engines in place of mercruser228's I would say most likely.
However I changed all the marine stuff from 228, including, cam, intake with carb, flywheel, oil pan, windage tray, new oil pump, dipstick tube, distributor, new timing chain and sprocket, senders, fuelpump, waterpump, best to use brass core plugs(my opinion) and complete with any other pertinent equipment. Safety first always. I have never had a complaint about the end result. None of the marine engines I replaced with auto engines were better or stronger in any way once completed this way in reference to the block and heads.

Enjoy your boat
