It's me again - and yes i am still looking for a lower unit for my 1968 evinrude. I have some more information though... it's model # 85893A and serial # e05625. I have found some reasonable lower units but no one can tell me if they will work with this one. Actually is there any other model# that will work.... that would sure make things a little easier if i had options. Any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Hmm...that's an electric shift gearcase. So that's what you'll have to have, and that could be a problem. Finding a good, working one may be difficult.

My suggestion is that you focus on buying one from a reliable supplier, like tcoutboard.com or one of the other outboard junkyards. They'll know which models are compatible with yours and they'll know if the one they're selling you works properly or not.

You don't even want to know how much the coils for those electric shift gearcases cost, I guarantee.

One other option available to you, if your powerhead is in known good condition, is to find a manual shift model of that 85 hp Evinrude that has a blown powerhead, then swap your good powerhead onto that engine.

The equivalent manual shift model number is 85853A.

Given the high cost of parts for the electric shift model, I'd think that this would be more economical in the long run. There must be some of these 85hp models out there with blown powerheads, just waiting for your good powerhead.

Failing that and failing to find a working electric shift model, you may just want to cut your losses here.

More information:

The equivalent Johnson model to your electric shift Evinrude outboard is V4A-20A. The parts will interchange.

The equivalent manual shift Johnson is V4S-20A, if that's of any use to you.

Some later model V4 lower units might also swap, but I'm afraid I don't have enough information on hand to tell you which ones.

Just remember: If you're going to swap lower units, the one you buy must be an electric shift lower unit. The manual shift won't work for you, due to a number of different parts and the lack of the linkages on your model.

Hay Rude Chick,

I just read your post and thought I would mention that I have a '72 100ES 100HP Johnson Electric Shift. Motor has very low hours and the bottom end is in excellent condition. I am upgrading to a 150HP and am thinking of parting that ES out on ebay. Is the lower unit somthing you might be interested in?

Mark
