Re: Will I be able to tow/launch/and pull up my boat

Its difficult to type with egg dripping off my nose. I hadn't realized Jeep had abandoned the body-on-frame. I've only owned one Jeep and that was quite a few years ago. They are not a vehicle of intense interest to me so admittedly I've not payed much attention to them since then. So for my ill-informed comment regarding that issue, I did as I directed others to do (looked underneath). I stand corrected and will take my 40 lashes with a brand new Jeep Brochure.

Hey everyone can't keep up on everything that is out there. Having said that, the unibody Jeeps are OK tow vehicles for smaller boats, like up to 21 feet and 4000lbs or so. Above that, they don't really have the wheelbase length and weight to handle the load well at higher speeds. But having the best 4x4 systems out there sure helps on the ramps! I also like the ultra simple 4.0 cast iron six, that was engineered way back when everything was not being designed for light weight and fuel economy. I am not a fan of these all aluminum engines and electronic 4x4 systems. Unfortunately, even the newest Grand Cherokees (2005 and up) are using electronic engagement of the 4x4 system. We'll have to see how well they work. For now I'll hang on to the stone age 4.0 six and NV 242 Selectrac manual transfer case, the real deal!

How can anyone expect to hold that BIG load on their roof with strings tied to the door handles?

I'm going to wake the dead here. Really you should have gone to the Maxima.org forums. I've pulled a similarly sized boat with a '98 (4th generation) maxma a few times. On the right ramp and the right hitch you'll be fine. Its maxima, not a civic. Its got plenty of powerand brakes for the job. Plus it would have had a good 1/2 ton on the boat and trailer. There are guys on that forum claiming to tow upwards of 3k (crazy) with their 4th gen maxima (which btw were the best ones) One guy claimed to have towed a 21 footer on a tandem axle trailer once over a short distance. (dont do that)

I hope it worked out for you, or you atleast gota truck.=)

That is absolutly f-in ridicules! I had this discussion with my brother in law wanting to tow 2000lbs with his freakin chevy cobalt. i told him i would send flowers to the funeral.

STOP BEING STUPID AND ENDANGERING OTHER PEOPLE. No one cares if you are impaled with the tongue, or your boat ends up 3 blocks behind you. but for god sakes, there are people driving around with little children that you are risking ALL OF THEM!

STOP BEING STUPID AND ENDANGERING OTHER PEOPLE.

That's all this thread boils down to. It amazes me that people think it's fine to push the limits of their vehicle, boat, and especially their lives for the sake of saving a few dollars.

I'd like to ask the original poster or anyone thinking this dumb set up is ok...

Would you get on a airplane that was supposed to travel 1800 miles if it only had fuel for 1000 miles? No, oh weird, why not?

Kind of puts things in perspective.

If you need to haul something that big make sure your vehicle can handle it. In all honesty, this thread was a stupid question from the start.

Re: Will I be able to tow/launch/and pull up my boat

The rest of the world tows with cars and they do quite well. In Europe and Australia the Maxima is rated at 3300 lbs, so I wouldn't worry about the frame. The unibody argument is false as well. Many vehicles are unibody and have very high tow ratings. The VW Toureg is unibody and has a 8000lb tow rating.

I find the safety argument suspect as well. Do you think an old beater pickup with drum brakes and stopping distance over 50% longer than your Maxima (which has 4 wheel disk brakes) is all of the sudden going to stop faster with a boat behind it?

I've towed the same boat with a Jeep Cherokee, Ford Ranger, and now a Toyota Sienna minivan, and the difference is night and day. The Sienna is a much more capable and safer tow vehicle in every aspect. It also does much better at the ramps. With fwd you have the weight of the engine on top of the drive wheels, and the drive wheels are out of the water. With a light boat like yours there is just not enough tongue weight to cause enough weight transfer off the front wheels. With the Ranger there were times we had to have people sit in the bed of the truck to get enough traction.

On top of that...you are only going 2 miles!!!

wow a bunch of nancys on this forum.

You'll be fine, especially with FWD, in my 10 years of boating, the ONLY people I've EVER seen stuck at the ramp had RWD!!!

edit: so 4 years later.......what did you go with?? :)
