Hi, brand new and glad to be here. Quick question about outdrives. Maybe a stupid question as they obviously have different nomanclature but here goes:

Will a Volvo Penta lower drive # 3860195 fit in place of a 3868912 drive and what is the difference?

The best way to ask this question is explain what
year/model/ hp they were hooked to??
Is one a duo-prop?

Sorry, new to this format. 2003 Wellcraft Coastal 320. The original drive is a duoprop. The engine is a 5.0 GXi-B rated at 270hp but I put stainless headers so probably does better.

You need to tell us what model of drives you are talking about rather than part numbers. If in doubt, post pictures of the two.

The original drive in my boat is a DP-SM 1.78 and the one I'm looking at is a DP SX-M 1.78. My understanding is that part numbers and serial numbers added a degree of precision to these type of questions.

They may be compatable. I think you will need to look at the mating surfaces of the old and the new. While basically the same there was a rubber gasket change between the drive housing and the pivot housing in that era of drives. You dont say exactly how much you are swapping, the entire transom assembly, gimble housing, pivot housing and drive or just the drive itself. I think you will need to carefully compare the old and the new units where you plan to mate them and see if all the holes and passages line up and appear similar.

Thank you, I appreciate the info.

If this is a genuine Volvo AQ model and you are mating the lower to the mid section you will need a depth micrometer to measure the height of the bearing cup on the lower and the cavity that it fits into. And as previously stated be sure to use a new “O” ring for the water passage and the other seals. You do not want more than a .002-.003 preload if my memory serves me right. You need that setting to keep the lower gears meshed correctly.
