Will my motor charge a battery?

I have a 1998 25HP Johnson Model # J25RECB. I want to know if I can hook it up some how to keep a battery charged. Also how hard to convert this motor to electric start? Would it be real expensive for either of these upgrades?

The charging system on most outboards will maintain the charge on a fully charged "good" battery with the normal electrical load if used fairly frequently. They do not put out enough juice or are run long enough to charge a discharged battery.<br /><br />To me it is good practice to top off your battery with a home charger the day before a trip rather than trying to rely on the outboard's charging system. I have seen too many frustrated boaters and their families sitting at the ramp after launch with a boat that won't start because of a dead battery.

Guest makes a nice charger.They are "smart" chargers, its a multi stage electronic charger, each stage has its own purpose. basicly without going into full detail, the charging process is less damaging to the battery and the final stage will actually clean the battery's plates of hardened lead sulfate to help you achieve max battery life. Guest is not the only manufacturer of this type of battery charger, I just happen to own one made by Guest. They are definetly worth the extra coin, especially if you dont get a good charge from your engine. Good Luck.

What Im trying to find out is if I can set my motor up to charge a battery. Currently my motor is not hooked to a battery. It is a pull start tiller controlled motor. I would like to know how to hook it up to maintain a battery for lights, livewell etc. while fishing. I do hope to convert it to electric start in the future and connect a helm.

If your motor did not come with electric start, then it likely doesn't have a charging circuit. It is possible to add one, though. You'll have to head to the dealer and order the parts, or if you have an outboard salvage yard nearby you might find them used. In either case, the dealer can get you the part numbers, etc...<br />- Scott

check if you got tre yellow wires coming out under the flywheel(one is yellow on is yellow/blue and one is yellow/grey<br />if so you only have to bye a rectifier that will convert ac dc<br />/per
