I had a friend pick me up a carb float for my '56 3hp 'rude at a parts shop he was going to out of town. The one I took out was cork with a round hole in the middle; the one he brought me is made of some kind of black plastic or resin and the hole in the middle has a slight squared offset on one side. The size and shape are identical and it fit right into the carb pefectly. The dealer told my friend it is for a newer modle motor but would work the same in my '56 and it would outlast cork. The part number on the box is 0396514 and it is made by evinrude. Any reason this won't properly work in my motor ? -Thanks

The old cork floats were sealed with shellac, which dissolves in alcohol so that the float could become saturated with exposure to ethanol. The newer floats should be used when applicable and available.

As long as the bracket is the same and it doesn't hang up anywhere, it should work. Try putting it in and reassemble the carb. With the carb upright, blow into the fuel inlet. Air should pass through. Turn it over and blow again - air should not pass through.

The foam float the mechanic has given you is the new replacement. Go ahead and use it.
