Will not stay running

[new boater]

I have a 175hp v-6 merc on my jet boat. I am new to the boating world and need any help I can get. Recently my boat would start hard like it is not getting any gas. Once it fired up it would run great, but if I just let it sit and idle the boat would want to stall. The last time I went out the motor would start and then stall right away, it would not stay running. Yes, I have gas in it and my choke seems to be working fine. Has anyone else had this problem or can someone give me advise on what to look for. Thanks for your help, the wife is anxious to get back on the water.

Throw some fresh spark plugs in it. And while you are there check the compression. Let us know what the numbers are and we can guide you from there. Maybe
