I have a sinus infection, and i don't have any anti-biotics, just some codeine. you think that will do anything for it?
I have some mild muscle aches, but the main problem is the congestion.

I wish anti-biotics were otc, not like they get you high.

Nah, that won't do anything but help you sleep. If you have one, sleep with a Vaporizier....preferably with some Vick's mist solution or slap some Vick's vapor rub on the nozzle. Pick up some Tylenol cold and sinus, or any decongestant medicines, as well as Mucinex. Over the counter nasal spray with saline also...I know, I hate nasal spray myself, but it helps more then you can imagine.

Try this crap with asthma...I just got over the same thing for the second time this season.

yea, i had this once before too. that afrin really helps. if you can get your nose clear enough to inshale it.
I tried the saline nasal wash, but it just made me feel like i swam in the ocean, and did not help me feel better.

i have been taking some tyelonal sinus, and that seems to work ok.

i never understood how people get hooked on the spray. I mean it use it a lot when i'm congested. But i won't use it when i'm not. Even if i was addicted to it.
Does it make u congested all the time if u get hooked on it?

There is an OTC antibiotic... It's called Colloidal silver. Buy it at your health food store. The Netty pot does help too and you can put the colloidal silver in the Netty pot. If you are real sick you need to be evaluated so it doesn't go further.

As far as codeine for a sinus infection... that would do what a birth control pill would do for a pregnant woman- nothing.

Don't use OTC nasal sprays, other than pure saline solution. They burn your sinuses out and make the problem worse.

You have to get rid of the infection, so antibiotics and/or prescription nasal sprays, are the ticket. Also be aware that many Family Practitioners don't understand how tough sinus infections can be - they are forever prescribing what an ENT of mine used to call "pediatric doses" of antibiotics.

You may also want to get checked to see if you have a deviated septum, especially if you get recurrent sinus infections in one side only, or the infections are noticably worse in one side.

Codeine may help you sleep, but is not gonna knock out the infection- Just You!
Sinus pain is a bugger, hope you get something to help out. The pot is the way Mrs. M gets relief in a pinch. I am lucky , only had 1 or 2 episodes ever. YUCK!

BTW- If anti-biotics were OTC, lots of people would be running to the pharmacy to get them for things that they do no good for , thereby resulting in even more drug resistant illnesses.

I'm not the vegan/tree hugger/fruits, nuts and berries type,,, but haven't been to the doctor in yeeeears by taking herbs (no not that type) when needed. If I'm coming down with something I load up on "golden seal" and "valerian root". 4 of each for the 1st dose and the 2 of each 2-3 times a day until it's kicked. WalMart and most drug stores carry these and it will probably set you back $15.

I have a friend that uses colloidal silver as mentioned earlier and he says it works well for him.

OTC Bennedryl helps me plus I gargle real good with Listerine after I brush to help keep my throat and mouth as antiseptic as possible. I use nasal spray also and have for years. As far as it being addicting I haven't noticed it. I only use it when I have a cold or something. As soon as I get over my ailment I don't need it anymore. All nasal sprays warn against using it for more than 3 days in a row so there may be some bad effects if you use it all the time. Like others have said here if it gets too bad I would break down and go see the doc for some antibiotics. Hope you get to feeling better real soon. God Bless. Dave

Re: Will pain killers help out a sinus infection?

I am allergic to dust and anytime I get a bad reaction it alway turns into a bad cold and/or sinus infextion. I get sudafed(get the stuff behind the counter that they won't put on the shelf anymore, it works better. If not the PE will work ok). I also take mucinex too. I use a netti pot a couple times a day as well to keep them washed out and clean. It may not feel like it helps, but it will shorten the length of being sick. At night I usually take nyquil and if I can't breathe I use a shot of nasal spray.

To whoever asked about nasal spray addiction you can get hooked. If you use it too much your sinuses will rely on it and congest really tight when you are off of it. I was hooked for over a year once and it was terrible. I would go through a bottle in less than a week of the 12 hour stuff. It took me 4 days of going cold turkey and breathing through my mouth to finaly kick it. I have been good ever since. That was one of the hardest things I ever had to do, I can't stand not breathing through my nose.

I would be careful about Colliodal silver-- you take too much and you can end up looking like a smurf. Try typing "Colliodal silver" into Google Images and take a look at the blue people. The color change is permanent.

Same here. Ibuprofen, saline flush and nose spray for me does the trick. I am prone to sinus infections in the spring, and at the first sign that I'm clogging up I open 'er up. I never use the nasal decongestant more than 4 days in a row to avoid the rebound effect. Can't take the oral stimulant type of decongestant....

I just did the Google image search. Yikes! The condition is called Argyria and it turns not only your skin blue, but your eyes and other organs, as well!

I'm not planning on joining the Blue Man Group any time soon, so I think I'll pass on the colliodal silver!

BTW, apparently the FDA has been after a few companies that sell this stuff. It used to be an accepted medication for infection, but has long since been banned as an approved medication, because of this problem.

So i guess affrin is more than just a saline spray? That is the only thing that works for me. I got some nasal decongestant pills, and that did not do a thing.
I imagine snorting anything for a prolonged period will mess with your sinuses. just like cocaine will.

i had a boss that would snort spray 24/7 he could not breathe thru his nose unless he shot up. i have been hooked on it but you just suffer for 2-3 days and you are off. there is a "king of queens" episode where arthur gets hooked. the netti pot from walmart works by flushing your sinus cavities out of dirt ,allergens just do it every 2 days wiil feel better. stay away from silver it is a cureall from the old old days. orange is the color for over doing it.
