Currently have aluminum 13.25"x17p prop on my 18' aluminum Crestliner Deep Vee with a Merc 115 4stroke. The wot speed is 38 mph (gps) at 5600 rpm + or - 100 rpm. The hole shot is lacking (slow to plane) and was wondering if going to a stainless steel 13.25" x17 would help with the hole shot? I don't want to loose any top end. Should I go with a different size and pitch with the stainless prop? Anybody have any suggestions. Thanks

Just switching to SS from AL will not make a huge difference in your hole shot. You may want to consider a 4 blade with a 16" pitch.

Re: Will SS prop help with Hole Shot

Thanks for the advise. Earlier today, I asked my boat dealership mechanic the same question and he suggested a four blade SS with a 16p. He also offered a loaner program where I take his prop out for a trial run. Best idea I've heard to properly dial in the prop issue. Thanks again.

yes a nice SS prop will help.but you must remember you have a 4 stroke and the reason its hard to get out of the hole is because 4 strokes only make power half the time on every other revolution.and the reason its so hard to get on plane is because all the extra weight of the 4 heavy stroke.

I know 4S' are heavier and slower to the rpms comparably speaking, however they sure are kind to the gas gauge. I think the lower pitched SS prop may make the difference. Thanks for the reply.

Is your current prop vented? A vented prop will improve the holeshot. Do an advanced search in this section and use the word vented.

What a rediculous comment.

Half the time on every other revolution?? It all has to do with the torque curve.

It's amazing the amount of mis-information out there regarding four strokes.

Maybe we should start making single stroke engines. That will make power twice as often as a two-stroke and four times as often as a four-stroke. Wonder why no one ever thought of this before? :)

You gotta suck and blow. That's two functions at least.

Not sure I understand why you guys are bashing this statement.

It is absolutely true that a 4 stroke engine has a power stroke every other revolution as opposed to a 2 stroke that has a power stroke every revolution.

It is absolutely true that in general 2 strokes develop torque faster than 4 strokes

It is absolutely true that 4 strokes weigh more than 2 strokes.

There are many good reasons to buy a 4 stroke, there are many good reasons to buy a 2 stroke.

but "rediculous statement" "mis-information" - not that I can see.

Make sure your dealer is not blowing smoke - what manufacturer makes a 4-blade in 16P [to fit your particular outboard] I do not know of one.

Given your setup and current performance figures, I believe the prop you need is a Trophy Plus 17P. You WILL notice a BIG difference in low-end power.

Dakota. Thought about it and no you don't. A turbine does it all in one operation. So I guess we have a single stroke engine commonly in use today.

We just need to adapt it to boats......well one guy did it. He went so fast that the boat became airborne like a plane, flipped over backwards. Killed him and demolished the boat. Had it all on film. What a mess.

We're bashing it because it was an ill informed statement. Read the whole thing, not just part of it. Let me quote-
you must remember you have a 4 stroke and the reason its hard to get out of the hole is because 4 strokes only make power half the time
I have a four stroke and it leaps out of the hole. The original poster claims that four strokes are hard to get out of the hole. False statement. Therefore, it is rediculous and uninformed.

See my post 4 blade 4 sale. I know it is aluminum but it is a michigan wheel vortex 4 - blade 16 pitch with an exchangeable hub. if you get the right hub it should work. The one that comes with it may even work - it is for a 15 spline alpha one sterndrive. I think both application use the same hub but i may be wrong. However, my new prop solas amita 4 blade says it is for a mercury outboard but fits right on my alpha one.

I'd be very interested to know how this prop performs for you. I am looking at the same prop for my boat but have no idea if it is a good performing prop and have nothing else to go on. You seem to be the only one I've found so far (and by luck at that), that has that prop.

Thanks,
Andy
