I am wanting to install a Teleflex Red International Series tachometer on my boat. I have a 140 HP Mercury. 1972 model. I saw a sticker on the motor that says Mercury quicksilver tachometers only. Went to Teleflex web site. Can't find out anything. Talked to a sells rep at a mailorder place. I don't think he knew what a tachometer was. But he was sure if I bought it it would probibly work. I ask if it may cause problems with the ignition, he was not sure but he would sell me the part. Anyone done this or can tell me if it will or will not work? Thanks Jerry

Yes, you can use a Teleflex tach. Set the switch on the back of the tack to 12 pole / 6 pulse. The sender terminal connects to either yellow wire at the rectifier. you may have a tach wire and positive wire ( key on ) at your remote control just for installing the tach.

Yes there is a 2 plug wire coming out of the front of the controler. It hooked to the tach of the original boat. I swapped the motor and contols over to another boat that had a bad Chrysler motor. I am wanting to use the Teleflex tach, because that is what my speedo, and fuel gauge are. Thanks for the information.

You want to move the tach signal brown wire inside the motor from the switchbox terminal to one leg of the stator.<br /><br />-W

What I have is the original Mercury control . It is for the engine that I am now using. The engine and the control came off a donor boat. That boat has a guage cluster that has a tach built into it. It had a wire from the tach that went directly to the from of the control box. I can not use that cluster on my boat. I want to use the Teleflex 28044 tach. Will it wire direct into my controller? Thanks.

See my above post... it stands. A tach only has 4 wires. Pos, Neg, Signal and lightbulb.

Update and 1 more question. I purchased the tach and installed it. I do not have a manuel yet to tell me the wiring diagram of this engine. I am not sure witch wire to more, so I ran a new wire from the yellow pole of the rectifier top the send terminal on the tach. My question is the original wire from the factory tach to contols. It is hooked to nothing at the front. Is it ok to be left as a open curcit or do I need to remove the wire in the engine? Thanks. I am buying a manuel so these thing will be a lot easier.

If if is not touching anything it should be OK. you could hook that existing wire to the yellow wire at the rectifier and but spice it at the control to your tach. The wire from the rect. hooks on to the send on the tach. Hook a wire from KEY ON ( run )to the ign terminal. Hook a ground wire to the ground term. And an instrument light wire ( positive ) to the instrument light term. Like Clam's said, MAKE SURE YOUR SEND WIRE IS CONNECTED TO THE YELLOW STATOR WIRE AT THE RECTIFIER AND NOT THE IGNITION!

I would like to have used the original wires in the harness, but I did not have a diagram to know exactly witch wire to move. I have brown and grey coming threw. And have been told to use each color from different sources. Also the harness is sealed shut and I did not want to cut into it. Also there are 3 wire slots at the front of the controler and I was not sure what to use for the tach. 1 is hot and the others seem to be grounds when tested with a olm meter. So I just ran a new wire.

OK. Use your new wire. ignore original wire. find the wire that is hot with the key on. This is the wire to hook to the ignition terminal. the two terminals left would be the groung. and tge light.

It is wired. Can hardly wait for the weather to get nice enough to go test run this thing. Nice classic old Winner Wildcat. 18' 1972 with my fresh 140 Merc. Had a Chrysler 140 I am wanting to see how the inline 6 compares to the 4 cylinder. Everyone I have talked to says the Merc will make more torque and power.

Everyone is right the tower of power inline 6 cylinder Merc is the way to go. I took the boat out for a test run today. I did not open the throttle completely. I watched the tach very close. I can run as fast with 3 adults in the boat now than I could with 1 person in the Chrysler. I stepped on the throttle a little after running around the lake for about an hour. I was surprized to see how quick this thing moved, and it was running as fast as ever and did not turn it over 5000. Did not aim to let it go that high but it happened so quick it.

I was reading through tach threads as mine is not connected. The wires in my boat are a real mess and I will likely re-wire everything this winter. In the meantime, I'm trying to identify the wire the that is supposed to go to the tachometer from my '74 1150. There is a round connector (about an inch in diameter) that goes into the front of my throttle control. It has 3 wires leading to it. It was disconnected and tangled up under the dash. Any chance that one of these wires goes to the tach?
Is there a way to identify a tach wire with a multimeter? It should pulse, right?

Yes, that is the tach harness coming out of the front. I can't remember which wire is which. I know that there is a power, ground and signal - if someone doesn't answer soon I'll see if I can find out this weekend when I have access to mine.
