Will the bilge pump automatically come on?

I have a 99 Chris Craft with a 5.0GL Volvo. I am planning on leaving it docked all summer. If I remove the key and turn off the battery will my bilge pump come on automatically?

Or do I just need to fill the bilge with water and see?

Just lift the float-switch. You should hear the pump running... If you have a float-switch, that is. Some pumps have them built in.

The float switch, if so equipped, needs to be wired directly to the battery, bypassing the battery disconnect switch.

Most boats are wired up so that the float activates power to the pump eventhough the batteries, etc. are turned off. . . but it is worth a test. :)

It depends whether the pump is automatic or not. Some have float switches (like a sump pump) and some are manually operated with a switch. No way for us to know. Throw some water in there and play with it!

Unlike automobiles, the boat ignition key is not tied to turning on/off the 12V system. That is what the battery switch does. Typically the Aux. setting on the ignition only powers the guages, engine alarm and fuel pump, then when turned to start...the starter.

is there electric available? Any bilge pump is only as good as the battery that supplies juice. I keep a cheap trickle charger connected just to keep the batteries topped off.
