Will the controls convert?

I have a 1978 johnson 35hp short shaft that I want to swap(do to the legnth of the shaft) with a 1975 40hp long shaft. My question is before I do this will the shifting and throttle controls match from the 35hp to the 40hp?

Don't know. First question is are the connector plugs both red? You can't mix and match colors. Second question is are the electrical cables the right length to reach their intended destinations? If you get past those hurdles, you might be ok.
