hello i have a 2002 bayliner capri 175 with 3.0 mercruiser. i recently ripped out another 3.0 engine from other boat and put it into my boat. its running pretty good, the engine was a 1987 with points ignition and bigger alternator. but i swapped over my electronic ignition, distributer, wire harness, etc. my 2002 alternator died, and my question is, can i use the 1987 alternator with my upgraded electrical system. like i said, its much larger then the newer one. somone told me there maybe a volt regulater or somthing inside the larger one, and the newer one has it somwhere on engine. is this true? i would like to take the boat out this weekend but dont wanna mess anything up. any info will be much appreciated. thanks, nick

Ayuh,.... The physical size of it is meaningless...
If it'll bolt on,+ wire up, it'll work... If it Don't, it Won't...

Otherwise, without out further Identification, it's hard to say...

Nope. New alternator has internal regulator.

FWIW - the old one should too...
