If someone would make the trade, that's what I'd do. I still use my 14ft jonboat for about 1/3 of my fishing or more.

Re: will this motor work

well the 10 hp would be for this year only. As I have been working on the boat for the last few months. I am looking to enjoy it this summer. If I don't use it this year its not worth having :( . Would I be better to trade my boat for a 14 ft jon boat with a 10 hp.
Depends on what you want to do long term. If fishing is your bag, and you're gonna' be doing it on lakes and rivers in GA (Nickajack and such) ... a 14' with a 10 can be a nice, VERY efficient and capable rig (I rather like that setup). But if you (and particularly the Admiral) want to be able to cruise comfortably as much as fish, it might be worth it to keep the bigger boat and put a larger motor on it.

Kinda' depends on the long term plans.

Smaller boats tend to be more scary than bigger for what it's worth. You already have a nice size boat, and the smaller outboard will work. Try it out. But if she doesn't have sea legs, a smaller boat will not help your cause, it will feel even less stable.

Well I have found a 25 hp mariner, that runs for a decent price. I will look at it tomorrow and doing a compression test. What would you guys think about that. I would feel safer with it.

A 25 would deffo be better, once again as its long enough.
But it appears to me that the problem and what you are trying to correct is the wife's fear of the water or boats in general.
I had the same problem years ago when I married and had a bass boat. She was terrified from the start because she had had never been out on the water and was 35 years old. So I helped her feel confident and this is how I did it.
Everyone wears a life jacket, no exceptions, all the time while on a boat.
First rides stay close to shore and keeps speeds minimal.
Be confident, never show signs of indecision and keep conversation other then what you are doing constant.
New riders fear bow rise on accel, they dont understand why this is normal.Minimize it as much as possible.
Might take a few rides for them to get somewhat comfortable, but once again, she is going to be looking to you for security and comfort.
Then again, some folks just never take to boating. Its a lot of confidence and adventure to trust a hole in the water to keep on floating until you place your feet on land again.
Hope this helps.

The 25HP will give you better "steerage" only because it'll be able to give you a little more thrust. It won't however get you going much faster, and surely won't get you on plane.

It will be a little better if you're up against a wind or current though.

I did buy the 25 hp mariner tonight. Now I just have to convert it over to console. IT looks pretty dang good on the boat. I will post some pics this weekend. I will be starting a new thread about some things that I need a little help with in the outboards forum.

Just steerage? I think it will do better then that.
If you can get the prop into clean water under the boat, Im betting you can get 15 + mph out of it with a light load.

Not just steerage: better steerage. Just him and a smile in the boat, he might break plane with a tail wind runnin' downhill. I dunno' really.

In a boat that size, 20MPH and it should be pretty much on plane. I don't think I'd expect that with a 25HP (at least with any consistency). Anything between about 10 and 18 is gonna' be that zone where the boat is (what I call) "cutting." It's just pushing water trying to climb on top of it. The last time I had a boat that I ran underpowered like that, she just didn't have enough to push past and we topped out around 12MPH. You could do 10MPH just kinda' gliding along like a barge ... or 12MPH shovin' water like a bulldozer.

YMMV ;)
