I guess with the appropriate mat it might just do the trick. I'm an epoxy guy so poly just doesn't excite me that much. Have no idea if it will be enough - don't know what kind of boat you have.
Hopefully either ondarvr or erik will pick up on this and get you steered in the right direction.

I'm redoing the transom in a 1968 Glasspar Citation which will have a 1972 evinrude 65hp triunph bolted too it.

your link has expired......so i dont know what cloth you were using.

was the resin poly or epoxy?

any who....whatever it was....no one gallon is not enough...you will be doing multliple layups with lots of tabbing.....plus if this is one of your first glass jobs....waist will be a factor as well.

for a transom.....minimum 8 combined oz s just for the outward side.

a cloth commonly used is called 1708.....8 oz of matt with 17 oz of cloth...its combined in to one peice....it will do the trick and then some.

if you can get more detailes on the cloth your planning on using...please post

I've been looking on napa's website none of the mats has the wieght of them just the size. I don't have any local boat shops around here just auto parts stores ,walmarts and lowes. is there any thing that they carrie that will work?

it seems lately wally world and local hardwars stores are all carrying the same stuff.....it will work..(matt first, then cloth)..but man they want an arm and a leg for it.....

look in your local phone book under fiberglass.....you will find it....

if your using poly....you will need mat and cloth or bi ax (combined)

if you cant find a combined product.....use the matt next to the wood. then the cloth...

very small town mifflintown in pa. we have nothing around here at all. i have to run 15 miles to the nearest wally world. our nearest mall is 40 miles.

First of all the Napa resin I am sure is waxed, therefore if you are doing multiple lay-ups you need to grind in between. Too much work for me. I am sure that there are some internet or businesses that would ship to your location. I would think 5 gals of unwaxed resin would be sufficient.

IMO, when bonding the new wood the the existing transom, I would use a couple layers of matt. You do not really need strength, more important is a good bond between the existing and the new wood.

For tabbing and finishing I would use matt as well as 1708. Not sure how much cloth you need because I do not know the size of boat which you are working on.

rob j is correct....and the link was expired again.....

look at the hull extension in progress thread.....it showes detailed photos of some different types of glass....


csm.......chopped strand matt......lots of hair like strands pressed togeather.

woven......fiberglass that is woven like cloth....

bi ax......the two togeather...(not the real reason for the name...but it will do for a now)

this is a real loose glossary....but it will do to help you
