I found this used tilt/trim system on Craigslist and I am curious if it would work with my motor. Here is the link to the Craigslist Ad

http://houston.craigslist.org/boa/2285030980.html

The Ad says it fits 1989-1997 40-70 HP Mercury/Force engines and the Quicksilver part number is 822344t 14.

I have a 1979 Mercury 40 (402 model) serial number 5253808. I was wondering if there is some way this tilt/trim setup would work with my motor, or if a simple modification would make it fit. The Ad also says it leaks down after a few days, but I have a friend who owns a hydraulic shop, and he could easily rebuild the cylinder for me and replace the seals, which would probably fix the problem. Any info is appreciated. Thanks

Basically no, the mount brackets on a 402 are different.

bad price, wrong model, not cylinder causing leak down.

You can get this type of system with pump problems off ebay for $100ish if you search. But, it is ebay. Most sellers would hit that with a $2 can of spray paint and ask $350. Shiny stuff sells for a lot more.

That model uses a long bolt that goes between transom bracket. Your brackets would not have the right holes in the right places. Your engine might be compatible with an anchor bracket style system. You would have to do your own homework to make sure that your transom clamps could take an anchor bracket. Here is ad with good pictures of systems and brackets.

Bleed down is common in that design. Not caused by cylinder. Caused by pump and/or trim bypass circuit. Your buddy probably doesn't have the parts on hand needed to do the fix unless he stocks Parker Hannafin EHA.
