Why not replace with OEM?

Personally I bought a rectifier / regulator that fits a motorcycle that keeps the voltage from going overvoltage.
The new MOSFET regulators (almost any of them) will work well.
I put one like this on my Sport Jet 90 hp force with the red stator (16amp)

In this case the two reds are tied together since the unitis good for up to 60 amps.
These regulators do not work like your car regulator and control the output of the alternator, but rather dissipate the excess current to keep the voltage fro going too high. The MOSFET ones clip the peaks where the older ones act like a controllable short to limit voltage.
In the case of motorcycle regulators the coils are usually three phase and most outboards are two. Just use two of the three input yellow wires and isolate the third.
The two red wires on your picture are probably just tied together in the regulator. A quick ohmmeter test would tell you.
The Motorcycle unit I used was too large to mount on the engine plate, but I had a spot to mount it in the engine compartment.
Look for a MOSFET rectifier / Regulator

A rectifier / regulator for a PWC would work as well.
Note.
The only reason that you must not use a maintenance free battery is that the excess power is used to boil off the electrolyte in the battery where the MOSFET turns it into heat in the unit, hence larger and finned unit for the motorcycles etc.

This would work on your Mercury ignition system.
Simple Man has a completely different Prestolite system.

They make a heavier duty regulator ​

My Friend gave me a rectifier/regulator. Sorry no brand name or part #. He said it was universal. works like a dream 14.5vdc at 2000rpm and up. It is a 4 wire unit

I know this is an old post but I finally got the part number for the regulator is used. It is a CDI 194-5279 Works great
