Today I decided it was time to upgrade to Win XP Home ed. I am currently running Win ME. I have a few questions...

Will I loose everything that is presently on my computer? I am talking about my Favorites list on my internet explorer? What about my Microsoft Office suite...will I loose the documents? What about any other programs that I have installed presently...will I loose them too?

I really don't want to go thru the labor of having to copy all my files and reload all my programs.

So what should I expect?

Bob

Re: Win XP Home Upgrade Help

You shouldn't lose the anything. If you want to save your favorites guaranteed, they are contained c://Documents and Settings/username in XP. You can just save the file and replace after the upgrade.I suspect they are in a similar place in ME though I have never worked on ME. Your Office documents shouldn't be affected. A word of caution - we have found at work that upgrading to XP is a little shakey. A clean install works well, but upgrades always have little bugaboos and instabilities. You might be better off in the long run to save what you want and do a clean install. Maybe someone here has ahd better luck upgrading and can tell us a secret. Good Luck.

Edit: Some of your other programs might not like XP so you could lose some functionality. I doubt it, but it is something to consider.

I second nothreat's recommendation. Clean install when moving from one generation OS to another is ALWAYS an excellent idea.

Well the deed is done. I am just having a terrible time with Norton AV. I just might pick an alternate one to install.

Bob

Yes I did. I uninstalled norton but still hainv severe issues when I re-install it. Once it is installed it is not permitting me to have ANY net access. I have been a Norton user for over 10 years but this one has me puzzeled. It is time for a change anyway so I might go with a Trend Micro suite.

Bob

Bob, please turn off, dissable XP built in firewall. Norton firewall will not play with XP firewall. I suspect this is why you can not access 'net.
