Winch cable cutting bow roller

I think my trailer is setup wrong. The winch cable is cutting into the bow roller. Any advice on how to fix this? I was thinking moving the roller to the next adjustment on the bracket and of course replacing the roller. The damage to the front was from the po rubbing against a dock overnight, that may be another thread in a different section but if anyone wants to comment on fixing that as well

Maybe just switch to a strap instead of a cable. Pretty normal for the strap/cable to want to run along the bottom of the roller during some of the pulling.

Looks like your cable is coming off the wrong side of the winch. Can you just unspool it and re spool it so it is feeding to the bottom?

I'm not sure? Will I still be able to crank it with the cable on the bottom? That would be an easy fix!

Sure you can crank it either way. Just pull it all the way out and then crank in whatever direction makes it wind on the bottom.

Out of curiosity, which direction does your crank currently turn when cranking in the cable? Clockwise would be what I would consider normal.

FWIW - my strap does come off the top of the winch, but that is what lines up on mine.

Just tried it, may be doing something wrong but with the lock on it will only winch in one direction and the cable will have to go over the top.

OK, so your winch has a chatter wheel - you are either in crank in or freespool. Can't reverse the direction on that.

Yep appears so. Would you raise the bow roller then to the other mounting location so the winch cable will not contact it as much?

You could try that, although all the boats I have had have the bow roller directly over the bow loop and the strap pretty much rides the bottom of the roller (I've never had a trailer with a steel cable)

I have a couple of different thoughts here... one is that the cable probably wouldn't be cutting the roller if it WAS ROLLING..... possibly just loosen the nut (should be a nylock) on the axle bolt...

The other is yeah raise the roller to the higher position BUT then you will have to lower the winch stand until the roller is back on top of the bow eye

Thank you for the replies...new to me trailer, I did change out the bow roller and loosened up the axle nut so it spins freely, I'm going try that and see how it works out with a fresh roller that's actually rolling.
