Found a 2000lb atv winch at the scrap yard. It's one like the HF imports or fleabay, much like this.

It runs and came with everything but the controls or wiring. Trying to figure out a cheap / inexpensive way to get this operational.

Looking around I see two options.

1) the momentary switch listed below.

Requires an inline fuse and thick wire from battery - switch - winch.

2) 12v Reversing Solenoid

Requires an inline fuse, a 2 way momentary switch, thick wire from battery to winch and thin from switch to solenoid.

I have wire that will work. Don't know what I'll use it for yet, but thinking of fabbing up an anchor winch for my tinny, or might just use it as a utility trailer winch.

Any input on either control system or is there another way to do it.

Personally, I vote for the relay. With the switch you will need to run heavy wire from the battery to the switch and then to the winch.

Relay lets you run heavy wire directly to the relay near the winch and light control wires wherever you want a simple light duty switch. Definitely vote for the relay if you are planning on a dash mounted control switch.

Go to a marina and have them order a replacement relay kit for either a, CMC tilt or a panther tilt. It will come with the switch and relays and wires, and it will be all assembled.

I think the relay kit you're talking about will be pretty pricey.

These winches can be bought new for under $70, I paid under 10. The controls that come with the new ones are junk and have undersized wire. The winch may not last long either.

Just trying to make something work for a little bit of nothing.
