Winch Needed...Other Left Me

I've been searching iboats for a winch to purchase. Need a winch for a 23' 4500lb boat. The trailer is pretty much a drive on with rollers. I drive her on and do a little winching to snug her up. She is secured well with chain after winching. I tow her up the ramp and leave her there

What size is recommended for this application?

If 4500lbs is dry weight, I'd go with at least a 6000lb winch. I understand that you float the boat on and only winch up enough to secure the boat; but you never know when you might need to actually use the winch to pull the boat onto the trailer. "Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it..." That quote's usually associated with firearms, but it fits here, too;)

A 2000#-rated 2-speed winch should be fine. You're pulling the boat (on rollers, no less), not lifting it.

If you need a 6000LB winch to get a 4500LB boat on a trailer I'd suggest you raise your outdrive before retrieval, or maybe back up a couple of feet.

A 2000LB winch is more than adequate, heaven knows your bow eye couldn't take much more than that anyway. A safety chain for towing is in order, (glad you're using one) don't rely on the winch alone.

Thanks guys. I am fairly new to trailering a boat. I currently have one of those cheap electric winches with a clutch that I don't trust. That stainless one cost more than I paid for the boat and trailer. I can't put a price on safety though.

As you know fairly well, sasto, my time is thin these days. I don't have much time for leisure. If you really needed help with something of importance, and I could pull off arranging the time, I'd be there for you.

... Didn't even think about that... DUH... Take me away:facepalm:

I'm fairly new at trailering, too. I grew up around boats in slips at marinas and private docks in New York. I've been trailering my own boat for only several months now. Regardless, I still feel a little foolish about the winch weight rating suggestion:redface:.

My boat is 3000lbs dry weight. Loaded, and with about 1/2 tank of fuel (56gal tank), It's no trouble or strain at all to winch her in with the manual (hand-crank) winch on my trailer. Don't know what gear ratio it is, but I'll try to get you that info if you're interested in a manual winch to save a lot of money without compromising safety.

I agree. I use a 2000# 2-speed strap winch like this one:
http://www.iboats.com/Stainless-Ste...2041044--**********.217374985--view_id.237896
Nicer than a cable!

That winch is dual drive but not two speed, it has a drive gear on each side of the winch spool for an even pull. It may still work for a boat on rollers, I don't think I would try it on bunks. Sounds like he drives the boat most of the way on the trailer and just uses it to snug the boat up and then secure it to the trailer.

Don't even worry about it, veritas honus. And thanks for your help, I am interested in the winch you have. I really won't be towing this boat on the road. She is to wide anyway. She stays in the water most of the time, but I pull her once in awhile to do some restore and maintenance. She gets pulled up a private ramp and left there on level ground. I currently have cable and would prefer a strap.

Thanks for all the replys and concerns.

Thanks for the info, nlain. You are correct, I pretty much drive the boat on the trailer and snug her down.

Mine has a strap. I'll take a look at it when I get home. I'll get you all the info I can. I took a look at the winches available on iboats and noticed that they have electric winches for up to 35,000lb boats. The manual winches are up to about 2500lb "capacity" I would think that that's in reference to the pulling capacity, and not the max boat weight. I'd question that before ordering, though. I'll be home in less than an hour. I'm leaving work late today. I clocked out more than an hour ago after returning from Shands in Gainesville, Florida. Had to bring a Patient with an aortic aneurism for surgery. I'm off for two nights, but I'm on call. I'll get back to you about the winch.

Re: Winch Needed...Other Left Me

Hey sasto,

My winch is a DL Profile 2000. http://www.dutton-lainson.com/proddetail.php?prod=14730 That exact model is no longer available, but similar ones still are. They are fairly inexpensive. Mine was original equipment with the boat/trailer as delivered to the original owner in 1992. I believe the equivilent model to mine is the 2000AB. The ratios are 12.4:1/5.4:1. I don't know the ratios of mine. This is as per the current specs listed in the link I've provided for you. Depending upon which winch you get (if you go with DL), you may have to buy the strap separately. They are listed on the site. Like my boat, the winch is 19 years old and works beautifully.

That's a nice winch, veritas honus. I'm pretty set on buying from iboats whenever possible. Sometimes I can get things quicker in my area and cheaper with my many discounts, but the iboats store has been good to me regarding parts and returns. Placing my order now.

Thanks bro for your help!

Re: Winch Needed...Other Left Me

around salt water, a popular rig is the power winch and roller trailer, so that you don't have to dunk the trailer axle in the water. "Float-ons" are a relatively new practice, and few people new to boating appreciate the damage from salt water, no matter how "sealed" your system is. And back in the day, we did a lot of cranking by hand, up tilt trailers.
Another nice thing about a power winch and not dunking is that you can use shorter ramps and at low tide.
Now, there are some boats that are too big to avoid dunking, but the trade-off is typically that those boats are kept in the water and only hauled occasionally.
So you might consider keeping what you have, or replacing the power winch, or fixing the clutch. Once the boat is on the trailer, the safety chain does the work and the winch is largely irrelevant.

Good points, Home Cookin'....I don't use the electric, only the handle. The ramp I'm using will not allow me to winch her all the way on. I have to back the trailer down over the fenders, float her on, winch her a foot or so, chain her, and pull out.

That said, I am new to trailering, so all advice is welcome.

Thanks!

I'm glad you're getting it from iboats. Which one? I was dissappointed when I found this morning that the winch I have is not available on iboats... That was the first thing I checked after looking at my winch.

Curious why a ramp won't let you winch on a boat? Time?

Design is the problem. She is a Penn Yan. The draft at the bow is almost 3 feet, the draft at the prop is 18". She keels over on her side if I try winching her up.
