aw shucks and gee wizz.......got to upgrade to XP I do believe.

Been beating the horse here to make windblows and Norton Internet Security like each other. Actually, they do like the other, but total resource hogs.
Been doing the select startup deal and researching what stuff not needed in startup to max resources. Pain.........ME is a Gates market pig IMO just 'cause. And the endless "must restart to".......is BS

My daughters machine w/ XP I can mod stuff on the fly.

Thanks for putting up with the *****.......love the wireless I got but configuring NIS and a home net is consuming!!!!!!!!!

This is interesting. I've been using Norton Internet Security for a couple of years now, and it has done great. I run the full suite because I have broadband, and its stopped not only intrusion attempts, but with the auto-update feature all the email worms that others sent me before the incident broke out in the big news (makes you wonder, if you're a conspiracy theory fan, if these companies don't have something do do with it :D ) Before Norton, I had McAfee and it was a complete system hog and gave me all kinds of pain. I haven't had any problems with Norton on my desktop running Windows 2000 Pro and my laptop which runs XP.

I'm with Jim. I wouldn't be without it. I has kept dozens of viruses out of my computer. I've had on occasion 5 or 6 hits in a day. I have had some conflicts though.

A windows update for 98 last November made the computer act like it had a virus until I figured it out & uninstalled the update. And recently norton 2004 made autocad 2000 not work. A fix is available from autodesk.

Disable the antivirus when installing software.

If you'd ever had a virus tear through your harddrive you'd appreciate it.

I must have left impression that I an having trouble w/ Norton..no. love the Nortan AV and IS software. In fact NAV catches all kinds of email attached viruses.

My problem is Windblows ME. Have had this OS on this Compaq from day one in '02. Buncha work to rid ME of unnecessary startup crap that clogged system. Was fine or so I thought 'till I moved from dialup to wireless net connection. And installed Norton IS due to abundance of popups and the like. And a wireless connection is always on unless 'puter is in stand by.

This change revealed what a "must restart computer b4 changes..." buncha crap ME is.
Moving to a Win XP Home addition install asap. No need for XP Pro for me.

'puter is:
Compaq Presario 7000..AMD 1.2 Athalon..512meg ram 266 mhz fsb..dvd..cdr..front usb and firewire...and so forth...

a marginal machine by '04 standards...but good for what I do.

It is the Gates resource hog windblows ME OS that has a burr under my saddle.

BTW, thanks for the replys guys!

Pat, your grief sounds so familar, amongst my collection I have a HP laptop and a Compaq tower and both have ME which convinced me that ME stands for "Misery Edition", the computer crashes so often I was ready to ebay it until I installed Norton System Works, the complete install. Now it works great except for Windows installed new hardware "building a device driver program" which usually hangs and won't alllow the machine to boot, had to re-install ME to get that to work, and running WIN Updates which
always hangs when it should be finished, fortunately powering the machine off reboots the machine and confirms that the upgrade actually worked; how clever and reassuring. I even considered updating the OS on the Compaq tower but it seems the unit was designed for ME only, and they mean it, no other version will install, not even with a fresh hard drive. A short time ago MS considered dropping support for WIN 95, 98 & ME, but reconsidered, the press release reported that only about 8% of WIN users have ME, no surprise there.

Just FYI: In our organisation the need for PC support decreased by 80% when OS was changed to Windows 2000 Pro (not XP!).

Our organisation is worldwide and comprises IT equipment for several thousand users.

XP was skipped due to networking issues and the extended 'helpful' wizards interferring with all aspects of using the thing (sooo annoying).

Why is Microsoft's latest networking OS not XP? It is still Windows 2000 - upgraded to Windows 2003!
