My contractor is off on his yearly holiday for a month.....

He will be replacing all of our windows, siding etc. new deck at our cottage this spring.

In deciding for windows, should we get sliders (windows are all about 45" wide by 40" high) or two casements side by side?

Currently they have crappy sliders.

One friend said to get casements has the track will get dirty.

Whis is more expensive?

Re: Window Prices

Casement windows are the most energy efficient draft free windows besides fixed glass (among compared windows of otherwise similar construction). Double-hung and slider windows are notoriously drafty.

If you're doing a lot of heating and cooling you may want to check out casements (you can also open them into the wind like a sail to pull in a cross breeze). I would think a GOOD casement for your opening might cost 400-500 bucks (there are likely cheaper ones available). You can get a single window with two opening panes for that opening size. Casements are also about the most expensive, you get what you pay for ;) .

Oh, you could check out vent-opening windows, they're like a casement that opens vertically. They are good for keeping out rain while open.

Re: Window Prices

SteamMill, I had all the windows in my house replaced last summer. I had old aluminum casement sliders in there, about the same size as yours (45x40). My contractor put in "Allside" double hung vinyl windows in side by side and it looks nice now. So glad we got rid of the old aluminum windows as half of them didnt slide at all or lock!! He put in 20 double hung windows a picture window and a crank out casement in the kitchen -- all with new interior trim and aluminum trim outside around window for $7500. Not bad considering other quotes we got. Your cottage may look good with the newer sliders in there, so its a matter of personal preference.
