Every time I turn our new laptop on the search assistant toolbar and the quick launch toolbar both come on. I right click the taskbar and close them both but they both come back everytime I turn it back on. What am I doing wrong? how do i get rid of them for good? Oh yeah on one of the posts someone mentioned using mozilla firefox instead of internet explorer. I want to thank whoever that was. I downloaded it and it works so much better then IE I havent had one pop-up since I loaded it.

Re: windows taskbar problems

Yes, that's by far the best browser currently available--especially when you learn all the features. Anyway, you probably have items in your registry that cause those items to start when you boot up or log in (or both ;) ). If you are using Win98, ME, or XP, go to Start >> Run >> and then type "msconfig" (without the quotes) and hit enter. Go to the Startup tab and then uncheck the boxes for the programs that you do not want to start automatically.

If you have Windows 2000, or if the above doesn't list the programs you are looking for, you may have to download Spybot from www.safer-networking.com to use their more advanced tool that does the same thing.

Oh, and before I forget, you should also check the startup folder that's in the start menu. If the program is listed there, just delete its shortcut from the startup folder.

Let us know how it's working for you. I'm more than happy to trade computer help for all of the boating help I have received from this forum. ;)

I just tried what you suggested and these things are still there. The funny thing is that my wife and I are the only ones using this computer and niether one of us ever opened them before. about a week ago they just appeared when we booted up.

Re: windows taskbar problems

Sorry you're still having problems, Formula. Let's see if we can figure it out.

It's important to know exactly which Windows version are you using (95, 98, 2000, ME, XP)? I'm assuming you have done all of the Windows Updates (by going to Internet Explorer, choosing Tools from the menu at the top and clicking Windows Update). You really must do that. In fact, that's the only thing I use IE for on my Windows machines. Tell us as much information as you can about which Windows version you have and service pack level.

Where do the search assistant and toolbar thing show up on the actual taskbar? Are they in the systray over by the clock or are they over on the left near the start button? Do they have any sort of brand identifying marks? It would be easier to remove if we could figure out what they were exactly.

Re: windows taskbar problems

its windows xp 2002 edition service pack 1. They appear in the middle of the taskbar one to the right of the start button and one to the left of the systray. Right click on your taskbar and hover over toolbars and you will see the ones im talking about. these are availiable one my other computer but they dont stay on. I can close them but they come back every restart. Thank you chris

I have address, link, desktop, quick launch and new tool bar in my XP.

I run IE and pop up stopper and don't ever have any problems.

You might want to check in the add/remove file in the controll panel and see if they are there.

Re: windows taskbar problems

hmm... That's an interesting problem that I haven't seen before exactly. I did find this by googling:

http://forum.gladiator-antivirus.com/index.php?showtopic=15096

which is a page dealing with exactly what you are talking about. There is apparently a registry key that you need to change to make it stop on reboot. It is this section of that page I'm talking about:
Start > Run > msconfig > Startups tab > uncheck Search Assistant

Start > Run > Regedit :
In Windows XP and IE6, you need to disable the Search Assistant to make the change take effect. At the registray key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

...change the Use Search Assistant value to No.
I will say messing with the registry in Windows is dicy stuff, because if it's messed up the machine may not boot. It would be best to find someone near you who has done it before to help you. There is a way to backup the registry with the regedit program, and if you attempt to do this yourself, I would definitely back it up.

Let me know if I can help you more.

I know mozilla is good, but what about Safari, I love it.

Re: windows taskbar problems

Well, Safari is a little platform-isolated. Plus, most of the great features (like the rendering engine) *are* Mozilla's. Mozilla's OK, but it (and the Netscapes 6 and 7) are slow and large. Mozilla Firefox is the best browser in my opinion because it has all the great features of Mozilla without the extraneous garbage. The last time I downloaded it (without having to give any personal information, I might add), it was 4.6 MB, which is *significantly* smaller than any comparable browser. It has great extensions. For example, check this out: http://bugmenot.mozdev.org

It's also platform agnostic, so I can run it on my Windows and non-M$ machines. You can get a separate matching email client, but I haven't used it. I like the one I've got already (Evolution).

to 1974...to get rid of your quik launch goto start-control panel-taskbar folder and un-check "show quik launch".. and spy -bot does not prevent pop-ups.. it finds ad-ware programs as well as some hijackers and replaces them w/ "dummies". the new bot has been out for a couple months.there was and old 1.2 but it's updated. the regular pop up stopper is awsome!! that will stop those pop ups..

Re: windows taskbar problems

I use PopupStopper, Lavasoft Adaware, Spybot w/ constant IE guard, and TrendMicro online virus detection. Before I used this regimen, I had so much crap in my system, the puter would hardly run.

They have worked real well now for a couple of months, until yesterday. My puter started running super slow on the net. I ran all the programs and they came up with nothing. I looked in add/remove programs and there were two small programs, that had been recently loaded and I did not recognize them. I deleted one, had to go to safemode to get the other one deleted and the ole puter just roared back to life. I do not know what they were but it was like I was dragging the Queen Mary's anchor.
