This popped up a weeek ago, wanted me to spend $50 to register. I didn't, but the thing keeps coming up. Anybody know how to shut this off?

Do you have a pop up blocker installed?

Is it really from the anti virus program that you are running? I would dump the anti virus and re-install a new one. AVG is very good and the free version does a good job of keeping things running clean. It is made by Grisoft.

Yes, pop-up blocker is on.
I don't know where it's from, sez Windows XP anti-virus 2008. I've got roadrunner and CA security

Re: Windows xp antivirus

"What is XPAntivirus? ...
XPAntiVirus (also known as XP Anti Virus, XPAnti Virus and XP AntiVirus) is fake spyware removal tool that is usually downloaded onto your computer by a Trojan (most likely the Zlob Trojan) or under dubious circumstances without your consent. Once downloaded, XPAntiVirus begins to haunt the user by displaying false security alerts and "detecting" fake threats. The purpose is to get the user to purchase the full version of XPAntiVirus spyware removal application."

Re: Windows xp antivirus

Hoss, even AVG will not catch spyware. (trust me I know, I have it, and did a spyware check for the first time in a year just this morning after my computer was running slow and dozens of issues were found). I use ad-aware and spybot, both free, both autoupdate, and both work. You just have to remember to do it!!! (unlike dingbat me)

Get those free spyware tools and run them once a week and you should not have any problems.

So, in other words, "no, nobody knows how to shut it off", right? Or, am I missing something?

BoatBuoy has the removal link at the bottom of his post...
(I also use AVG, Adaware, and Spybot...never a problem, all free)

I use avast, stops them cold.

Running a router with NAT is also a good line of defense. Even if you only have one computer the router helps to shield your computer from the internet nasties..................

I also use avast, excellent. It found and cleaned stuff that spybot, Mcafee(full paid version) and AVG missed.

Guess I didn't make myself clear, I did the removal, uninstall thing, but every time I turn the computer on, and every 15 minutes or so while it's on, I get this popup that says "93 infections found, register now"? Wondering if i can make it stop?

Try to run the removal/uninstall thing while in Safe Mode.

Seems we had a similar problem on one of our computers. We did a system restore and that took care of it.

My suggestion is to go back to the link that BoatBuoy posted and follow the manual uninstall instructions.

Once that's cleaned up you might want to scan your whole computer for spyware just in case you have some other infections.

If you'd like, download HijackThis and paste your log here and we'll look over it.

I recently repaired a laptop that had a similar problem. I used COMBOFIX found on the internet and it did the trick.

What you have is deeply embedded spyware.

Re: Windows xp antivirus

I've had numerous attacks while using the windows explorer for browsing but now that I use Firefox as my browser that is all gone. :)
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Firefox works very well in windows and has tabs instead of opening other broser pages to view more sites and will recover your websites if you close unexpectedly.

Just my humble thoughts on this issue. I never use the windows explorer browser because of all the attacks on it.
