Winter Cover- what do you all suggest?

I have been using a Blue Tarp the last two years, but I have noticed the tarp started to disintegrate and it did a poor job of keeping the inside clean and dry.

Thinking of buying a custom cover- for a 21 footer it will cost me about $200, so it is worth it.

Boat is a Seat Ray Sundeck and I wanted to see if you all suggested this is a good idea, if there is a particular brand to go for or stay away from and whether or not the Sunbrella mooring covers stay on under the cover.

Your input is appreciated.

What is winter like in your area? That probably makes a bigger difference than anything else......

$200 for a custom cover?? That seems like a REALLY good price.....what type of cover?

With the harsh winters here, I have never gone with just a cover....I have always still covered the regular cover with a tarp or two. If I have to throw the tarps away in Spring sobeit.

"Real" cover then a one-season tarp.

Car port. More money, but a permanent solution....

I use a Home Depot heavy duty tarp as a cover. I tailor it a bit so it fits well. I put a new one on in the fall when I winterize the boat. It will last through the next summer.

I live in the mid atlantic region.

Connecticut Winters, so can be bad.
The $200 cover is not custom, its for any 22 foot boat.

Thx.

Honestly, IMHO, you need to drop 300 plus to get a true winter cover. The sub-200 ones are great as dust covers and light rain covers; they ain't worth it as winter covers.

Is this cover the only protection your boat will have? My boat is in a 3-sided covered storage shed and then covered by what used to be a good poly cover 12 years ago. Now it is in need of replacement as the front is bleached out, dry and splitting...but I guess I got my money's worth :)

I had to go the full costom cover route because I do not have any form of shed for winter storage on mine, So I had one made for my 20 x 8 foot toon.

Forget about a cover for outdoor winter storage - have it shrink wrapped.

So something with this type of construction and features would make a good winter cover?

Custom Grade 600-denier polyester construction.
Fabric reinforcement at bow and stern.
Reinforced web loops.
Bow strap, storage sack and trailering straps for tie-down.
Dual rear air vents.
5 year warranty.

I bought one last year for under $100 for my Procraft

I agree. You need to keep enough tension on the cover to allow snow to shed properly. This is difficult with a tarp. In New England it's tough to get a tarp to last multiple seasons. It's not impossible, many do it. However it has a much higher rate of failure than shrinkwrap.

Wow, that would cost a lot...

I have had my new toon out twice, but I can still expect SOME snow at my house until mid-June. When we moved in, on Memorial Day, 1996, there was 5" of new snow on the ground.

So "Boating Season" starts at least a month before the end of "Snow Season", and can extend two months into the next "Snow Season".

LOL - I'm talking about the over the winter storage. Not the end of the world if a cover gets snowed on a couple times after you start using it but we see a ton of boats trashed in MN when people think they can just stick a tarp or conventional cover on the boat for the full winter.
